Albert W. Ellis, Sr.

In addition to Albert's passion for basketball and community, he was a dedicated Dallas Cowboy's fan and gave generously of his time and resources to his family and friends.

Funeral Services: Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. from Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry Street, Columbia, PA

A viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church.

 

Albert Wilson Ellis, Sr. was surrounded by family when he passed away on December 28th. He was the son of the late, Dorothy and James Ellis, Sr. of Columbia, PA.

Born into a sports family, Albert shined playing basketball at Columbia High School. He contributed to 4 championships (Section/District), from 1965-1966, with a record of 59-10 by 1967. As a two-year starter and team captain ('67), Albert amassed 913 points in his CHS career averaging 25.5 points per game his senior year. That same year, he was awarded First Team AllCounty and an All-State Honorable Mention.

Albert furthered his career in the 1970's playing semi-professionally for the Lancaster Big 5. Playing tournaments both domestically and internationally, he won 3 regional championships, 2 national championships and 10 Tournament MVP awards.

Albert was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in May of 2022.

As an active community leader, Albert served on the Columbia School Board for five years and as Board Member of the Columbia Hospital Trustees for six years. Albert retired from the Lancaster County Courthouse in December of 2010, after over 40 years of service.

Albert is predeceased by his brother, Jerome Ellis, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Lynn; his children, Alicia Ellis-Godwin, Albert Ellis, Jr., Abriel Ellis-Simpson (Raymond), Alston Ellis (Alida) and Michael Ellis (Alicia); and his grandchildren, Eric, Aaron, Xavier, Ashlyn, Cameron, Madison, Myles, Avery, Winter and Augustus; 11 great-grandchildren; his brothers, David Boots, James Ellis, Jr., Larry Ellis and his sister, Barbara Wilson and their respective families.

Funeral Services for Albert will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. from Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry Street, Columbia, PA with Rev. Dr. Patricia McAllister and Rev. Adrian Boxley officiating. A viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church.
