Phoebe C. Baxter, 71, of Columbia passed away on July 28th, 2019. She was born in Lancaster to the late George and Sarah Wise Rafferty and was a lifelong resident of this area. Phoebe worked for R & S Manufacturing and retired after working there for almost twenty five years. She was active in the Marietta American Legion Post 466 Ladies Auxiliary. Phoebe loved animals and was known to donate regularly to the Columbia Animal Shelter. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Phoebe leaves behind her husband of forty two years, George Baxter of Columbia; her daughter, Teresa, wife of Jerry Johnson of York; her grandson, Justin Eichelberger, fiancé of Sarah Fengfish of Marietta; a sister, Patricia Way of Marietta; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert and Ronald Rafferty; her sisters, Anna Gable and Betty Nagle.

A graveside service for Phoebe will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1st, 2019 at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in Columbia. Her family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. Mildred J. Wickenheiser, 98, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at Luther Care where she had resided for the past two ½ years. She was the wife of the late Robert L. Wickenheiser, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1991. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Bastian Miller.

She was of the Roman Catholic faith and enjoyed bargain shopping and always looked forward to a "Coke and a Smoke."

She is survived by her children, Deborah A. wife of Ronald E. Strick; Robert L. Jr. husband of Ann Wickenheiser; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Her sister, Dorothy Talacki preceded her in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, PA 17512 on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Stephen P. Kelley, Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery. Friends may view at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of mass. Robert C. Bigler, 75, a lifelong Columbia resident, passed away on July 24, 2019 at the Lancaster General Hospital. He was the son of the late George and Emma Smith Bigler and the husband of Teresa Fritz Bigler with whom he was married 55 years.

Bob retired in 2006 after 42 years of service from the former ITT Grinnell Corporation where he worked in the shipping department. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Columbia and enjoyed rooting for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

In addition to his wife are his sons, Robert S. Bigler; Gregory M. Bigler (Mary Musser); granddaughters, Adrienne Billet (A.J.); Kaylie Bigler; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Andrew; sisters, Susan Grove (Bill); Frances Pelen (Buzz) and Jane Frane. He was preceded in death by his siblings, George, Jim, Tom, Judy and Mary Anne.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, Sixth and Locust Sts. PO Box 391, Columbia PA 17512 on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Beth Costlow, officiating. If desired, contributions in Bob's memory may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.

Barry D. "Scoop" Ford, 60 of 369 Locust St., Columbia, PA died at the Lancaster General Hospital on July 18, 2019. Born in Columbia he was the son of the late William H. and Roma Steiner Ford.

Barry retired as the Editor of the former Columbia Ledger. Previously he was employed as a Reporter for WSBA and the former Columbia News. Barry was of the Christian Faith. He was very active in the Columbia Boys Athletic Association where he coached several teams. He also assisted with teams at Columbia High School and served as a score keeper. He was an extreme Eagles and Phillies fan. He served on the Columbia School Board, Columbia Boro Council and the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his Companion: Rose Bennett of Columbia, Cousins: Karen wife of Norman Fable of Manheim, Heidi wife of David Heisey of Millersville and Timothy husband of Cindy Herr of Marietta and a number of Nieces, Nephews and Great Nieces and Nephews.

A Celebration of Barry's Life will be held at Columbia First Church of God, 7th & Walnut Streets, Columbia on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 11:00AM (Visitation from 10:00AM – 11:00AM) with Rev. Fred Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Boro Cemetery. There will also be a Visitation on Friday evening, August 9, 2019 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM at the Clyde W. Pamela Gale Simms, 59, of Columbia, died peacefully on Monday, July 22nd, 2019 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Anna Jankans Simms. Pamela treasured spending time with her grandchildren and great grandson. She enjoyed watching soap operas, shopping, and going to Ocean City, Maryland for Springfest. Pamela liked to sit on her porch and talk to her neighbors. She was the block watch.

Pamela is survived is survived by her daughters, Rachel Simms and Janice Moore of Columbia; her brothers, Charles W. Simms, Sr, Keith Simms, Kevin Simms of Columbia; a sister, Michelle, wife of Darryl E. Grimes, Sr. of Columbia; six grandchildren, one great grandson; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Aarone Moore; brothers, Craig L. Simms, Steven A. Simms; sister, Julia A. Simms.

Services for Pamela will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 3rd, 2019 at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, 297 S. 5th St, Columbia, PA 17512. The Rev. Adrian Boxley will officiate. Terry Smith went to spend eternal life with our Lord on July 13, 2019. He passed away peacefully (with a smile on his face) with family around him.

He is survived by three children, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Terry was very active with The Water Street Rescue Mission and served as a counselor for the CHOC program for four and a half years.

He enjoyed reading, playing cards, relaxing, watching movies and sleeping.

He always enjoyed the company of friends and family.

At this time there will be no formal services and any future services will be announced by David’s family.

Ruth V. Budesheim, 93, of Washington Boro, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2019 at St. Anne's Retirement Community where she had resided for the past sixth months. She was the wife of the late Robert Budesheim with whom she was married 54 years until his death in 2000. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Walter D. and Etta Rank Horner.

Ruth retired after many years of service from the Columbia Hospital where she worked in the laundry department. She was a faithful member of the Columbia Presbyterian Church and had served as a church Deacon.

She loved her family, friends and found great joy in their company.

Ruth is survived by her children, Paul M. husband of Kathy A. Budesheim; John J. Budesheim; Mary Jo McDonald; Angela R. wife of Bruce Banner; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her son, William R. Budesheim and seven siblings.

Funeral services will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. 519 Walnut St. Columbia PA on MONDAY, JULY 29, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. David Powers, officiating. Entombment will follow in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may view one hour prior to the service.

Geraldine Swingler Beaston, 92 of Columbia, PA died on July 16, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care, Mt. Joy, PA. She was the wife of the late Carl "Andy" Swingler who passed away in 1972 and the late Charles M. Beaston who passed away in 1995. Born in Columbia on November 29, 1926 she was the daughter of the late Henry and Emma Rineer Wetzel.

In her younger years she helped her parents at Wetzel's Confectionary Store at 11th & Barber Streets in Columbia. She was also a volunteer for the Susquehanna Visitors Center in Columbia. She was a graduate of Columbia High School Class of 1944. She was a member of the Columbia United Methodist Church. She was an avid bingo player at the Columbia Fire Co. # 1. She loved spending time with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her friends and classmates.

She is survived by a Daughter: Maxine Swingler of Columbia and a Son: Carl "Rock" husband of Tracey Groft Swingler of Columbia. Also surviving is a Step Son: Charles "Chip" Beaston husband of Kay Crist Beaston of Austin, TX and a Step Daughter: Jane Beaston Daggett wife of Richard Daggett of Oxford, PA., 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson: Andrew "Andy" Swingler in 2001. The family would like to thank Hospice and Community Care for the excellent care Geraldine received while she was in their care.

Funeral Services for Geraldine will be held from the Columbia United Methodist Church 5th & Walnut Streets Columbia, PA on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 11:00AM with Rev. Thomas Grubbs officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 10:AM – 11:00AM. Interment will follow the services in Ironville Cemetery.

Sandra S. Beaston, 55, of Wrightsville, passed away at home on Monday, July 15, 2019. She was the wife of Steven. E. Beaston, Sr. with whom she would have celebrated 33 years of marriage in October. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Tomas Jr. and Sally Ann Reahm Swan.

A graduate of Penn Manor High School, Class of 1982, along with her husband Steve, Sandy was co-owner of Park Side Auto Sales. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, the outdoors and tending to her Koy pond. Most important to her was spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her husband are her sons, Steven E. Jr. husband of Katie Beaston and Jonathan M. husband of Ashley Beaston.

Ronald L. Walter

Ronald proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was known for his American pride.

Ronald L. Walter, 83, of Wrightsville passed away on July 5th, 2019. He was born in York to the late Lind D. and Edith Mann Walter and was the last of his immediate family.

Ronald proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was known for his American pride. While in the Navy, he worked as boiler tech aboard the U.S.S. New DD818. Following his time of service, Ronald worked for Cole Steel for twenty five years and was head of the union at his place of employment before retiring. He then worked for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for another ten years before retiring again. Ronald loved sports, especially the New York Yankees and Giants, and the Philadelphia Flyers. He was also an A.S.A. umpire for a number of years and that is where he met his wife. Ronald was a member of the East Prospect Fish and Game Association and also the Tin Can Sailors.

Ronald leaves behind his wife of almost thirty four years, Denise Walter (Fisher) of Wrightsville, formerly of Columbia; his children, Karen, wife of William McMaster of Manchester, Lance, husband of Patricia Walter of Philadelphia; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a large extended family; his canine companion, Bean.

Services for Ronald will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 12th, 2019 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens. David leaves behind his daughter, Kelly Linville of Baltimore, MD; his mother Darlene Bell of Columbia; his siblings, Denise Stansbury of Columbia, Tony Tomko of Lancaster, Lisa Buss of Elizabethtown. In addition to his father, David was preceded in death by his loving grandparents Tony and Dolores Rossi; Marion Linville and Joseph & Marie Gerlovich.

On the afternoon of July 3rd, 2019, Ruth K. Kent, 96, passed away of natural causes due to dementia, at Luther Acres, Lititz, PA.

Born in Carbondale, PA, Ruth was the daughter of the late Cecil J. and Elizabeth K. Kilmer. Her husband, Richard T. Kent, passed away in 1964. Her brother, Robert Kilmer, passed away in 2017.

A graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School in Carbondale, PA, Ruth enjoyed an early career in banking and after many years, retired from International Salt Co., Clarks Summit, PA. Ruth was known as much for her style and grace as she was for her beauty and wonderful sense of humor. She was always dancing to the music.

Ruth leaves behind her daughter, Gail K. Beam (Ronald) of Mountville, PA and her son, Robert J. Kent (Mara) of Parkersburg, WV. Grandchildren; Michael Poff (Stephanie), Lancaster, Adam T. Poff (JoEllyn), Lancaster, Ashleigh P. Lambert (Brian), Alexandria, VA, Amy K. Stevens (Matt), Parkersburg, WV, Ryan J. Kent, Vienna, WV, Kristin B. Heller (Josh), Manheim and Danielle Beam, Lancaster. She was the proud Great Grandmother of Aiden, Madison, Adalyn, Sean, Sloane, Carter, Graham, Ben and Brad. Ruth also leaves behind her sisters in law; Ann Kilmer, Carbondale, PA and Eleanor McClelland, Bath, NY, as well as nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of St. John’s Herr Estate, Agape Way, Luther Acres and Masonic Village Hospice for all of the exceptional care, love and support that was given to our Mother and our family during this journey.

Naomi M. Roehm, 95, formerly of Landisville, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019 at her residence at Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim. She was the wife of the late Vincent P. Roehm with whom she was married 58 years until his death in 2002. Born in Rapho Township, she was the daughter of the late Ezra and Annie Breitigan Waltz.

Naomi was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Lancaster. She retired after 25 years of working in the Hempfield H. S. cafeteria. She will be remembered by her family as a loving wife, mother and nanny who was a great cook and baker. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends.

Naomi is survived by her children, Patricia, wife of Terry Stringfellow, Hatfield PA; Carolyn, wife of Michael Craig, Houston, TX; Charles, husband of Darlene Roehm, Manheim, PA; five grandchildren, Matthew, husband of Marcie Stringfellow, Plano, TX; Gregory, husband of Lisa Stringfellow, Hatfield, PA; Lynn, wife of Chris McGrew, Houston, TX; Kristen, wife of Gareth Jones, Norfolk, U. K.; Julia Roehm, Lancaster, PA; two great grandchildren, Ethan and Kara Stringfellow. She is survived by her brother Norman Waltz. Seven siblings preceded her in death.

Nancy Kay Persing, 77, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019 at the Lancaster General Hospital. She was married for 28 years to the late Fred L. Bender, Sr. and the companion of S. Eugene Kulp until his death in 2017. Born in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Melba Shade Persing.

Nancy graduated in 1959 from the Lewistown High School and the South Dakota University with a degree in food service which she worked in for many years before retiring in 1996.

She was a member of the Milton Grove United Methodist Church and enjoyed camping, traveling, gospel music, the mountains, driving, going to the beach, shopping and spending time with her family and grandchildren and her rescue dog, Tori.

Her faith and devotion to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ sustained her through her life for which we are eternally grateful.

She is survived by her daughters, Lisa, wife of William O'Connor; Sheri, wife of Brian DeArmitt; Lorrie, wife of Rodney Groff; son, Fred L. Jr. husband of Kathy Bender; Ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survives.

Funeral services will be held at the Milton Grove U.M. Church, 2026 Cloverleaf Road, Mount Joy PA 17552 Friday, July 5, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jamie Pietsch, officiating. Friends may view at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown PA. Dorothy worked for many years in the bindery department of
Brookshire Printing, Lancaster. She was an avid reader and enjoyed
doing puzzles. Dorothy treasured time with her family and loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She proudly served her country during her husband’s military service having five children born in five different states.

Manheim; seven grandchildren, Renee Havrilla Rahe (Doug), Joseph Havrilla (Mandee), Phillip Havrilla (Vanessa), Susan Zeamer (Chad), Kristy Royer, Cody Rose Kellander, Traci Cornelison (Alex); thirteen
great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Royer, Sr. in 2014 and her daughter Linda Shafer (Frank) in 2004.


Services for Dorothy will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1 st , 2019 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St. Columbia, PA 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. until service time. She will be laid to rest with her late husband at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens.

David Michael Millhouse, Sr. 57, of Columbia passed away on June 21st, 2019. He was born in Lancaster to Kenneth Millhouse and the late Joan O’Connor and was a lifelong resident of this area. Dave was known to be laid back and hard working. He enjoyed boating, spending time with his grandchildren, and watching his Dallas Cowboys.

Dave leaves behind his wife of twenty seven years, Tina Millhouse of Columbia; his children, David Millhouse, Jr, Charles Kinard, and Tarra Christensen all of Columbia; two grandchildren; his sister, Marcella Millhouse of Columbia; his brother, Kenneth Millhouse of Maytown.

Patrick P. O'Reilly, 56, of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at home. Born in and a lifelong Columbia resident, he was the son of the late James W. Sr. and Charlotte "Sis" Bransby O'Reilly.

Pat was employed for 23 years at the U.S. Lock and Hardware Company, Columbia and later at KRB Machinery. For the past few years he was the caretaker of his mother until her death on June 5, 2019.

He is survived by his brothers, James W. Jr.; Shawn B.; niece, Kelsie B. He was preceded in death by his son, Cody Campbell.

A private burial will be held in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mark S. Kopp, officiating.

Ruth E. Nagel, 70, of Marietta, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care. She was the wife of Everett E. "Gene" Nagel with whom she was married 54 years. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Paris B. Sr. and Marie Brock Zink.

Ruth retired in 2011 after 30 years of service from the former Donegal Industries, Mount Joy, where she worked as a sewing machine operator. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and trips to the family cabin in Perry County. Her greatest joy was spending time with her great niece, Ally.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her niece, Esther Gantz; great niece, Allison Gantz; great nephew, Tyler Sauder; nephews Michael and Todd Hartranft, and a sister Carol Hartranft. Her son, Everett E. "Gene Jr." Nagel and brother Paris B. "Zeke" Zink, Jr. preceded her in death.
