Gloria G. Carter, 94, of Landisville, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at the Bob Fryer and Family Inpatient Hospice Center. She was the wife of the late Hollis J. Carter who preceded her in death on September 4, 2008.

Gloria was the daughter of the late Anthony and Marie Sprague Iannetta. Born in Keyport, NJ, she and Hollis moved to Lancaster in 1966.

Gloria was employed in banking for many years, resigning to become a lifelong homemaker, a job that she cherished, always putting family first. She loved cats and dogs having many beloved pets throughout her life.

She is survived by her sons, Hollis W.A. Carter; Thomas T. Carter; grandchildren, Sarah Garner, Ben Carter and great-granddaughter, Adelaide Garner.

A private service will be held for the family only with interment in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Sameh Fawzy Louka, 51 of Columbia, PA, was born in Cairo, Egypt on November 9, 1967 and went to Heaven to be with the Lord on October 18, 2019.

He graduated from the school of Medicine at Cairo University and specialized in Anesthesia and pain management before moving to the USA. He is survived by his mother, Karima and a brother Samy. He was preceded in death by his father Fawzy and his brother Samer.

Funeral Services for Sameh will be held from the Valley View Alliance Church, 200 Alliance Ave., York, PA on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 11:00AM (VIEWING: 10:00AM – 11:00AM) with the Rev. John "Jack" M. Lockard

Served in WWII and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. Jack received the European-African- Middle Eastern- Campaign Ribbon, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Presidential Unit Citation.

John "Jack" Milton Lockard, 96, formerly of Mount Joy, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2019 at the Kadima Rehabilitation and Nursing at Campbelltown. He was the husband of the late Mabel Shertzer Lockard with whom he was married 72 years until her death in 2017. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Milton Hershey and Ena Beittel Brown and the adopted son of the late John and Cora Nace Lockard.

A 1940 graduate of Columbia High School, he proudly served his country during WWII and completed 35 missions as a B-17 bomber pilot on the plane that carried the name "Little Lulu" during the war. When he was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant, he received the European-African- Middle Eastern- Campaign Ribbon, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Presidential Unit Citation. From 1958, he was employed in the computer industry throughout the U.S retiring in 1985 as a Computer Systems Analyst for Kayser-Roth Corporation.

Jack was a member of Reich's Evangelical Congregational Church, Marietta and often spoke of his experiences at the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy.

He is survived by his daughters, Sandra, wife of Alvin B. Light; Sharon Hawkins; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and half-sister, Armyllis, wife of Jack Martin. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Harry Brown.

Funeral services will be at the Reich's Evangelical Congregational Church, 388 Stackstown Road, Marietta, PA 17547 on Friday, October 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel T. Blank, officiating. Interment will follow in Creswell Cemetery. There will be no public viewing, however, the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Kindly omit flowers. Contributions in John's memory to Reich's E.C. Church at the above address would be deeply appreciated.

B. Ruth Peters, 94, formerly of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Luther Acres where she had resided for the past five years. She was the wife of the late Gordon K. Peters with whom she was married 52 years until his death in 2001. Born in Uniontown PA, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Anna Wilcox Johnson.

Ruth graduated from South Union High School in 1943 and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1947. After graduation, she taught business classes for 27 years in the Donegal School District until her retirement 1982. In addition, Ruth was a faithful member of the Columbia United Methodist Church where she served on various committees and taught Sunday school.

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Kay, wife of Charles Leader; Ruth Ann, wife of Michael Weigel; grandchildren, Matthew and Rebecca Leader, Sarah Musser, Jon Weigel, Jenny Brewer, Kyle Mathiot; nine great-grandchildren and a sister, Doris Wallace. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Mathiot and siblings Nora Brown, William A. Johnson, Jr., Anna Riddell and Janet Thomas.

Ruth's family appreciates the compassion and care shown to her by the staff of Luther Acres and Compassus.

A memorial service will be held at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 510 Walnut St., Columbia, PA 17512 on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Grubbs and her grandson Pastor Jon Weigel, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Kindly omit flowers. Jessie was an avid book reader who loved visiting the library.

Jessie Brown, 72, of Columbia passed away on October 9th, 2019. She was born in Columbia to the late Harold and Evelyn Gable, but was raised by her foster parents, Charles and Laura Smuck. Jessie was a lifetime resident of this area and worked for many years in the packing department at the John Wright Corporation. She was an avid book reader who loved visiting the library. Jessie also enjoyed playing bingo and was a member of Lancaster Church of God.

Jessie leaves behind her son, Gilbert Bice, companion of Shelley Duncan of Columbia; a sister, Phyliss, wife of Doug Miller of Hellam; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and other family members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Ralph Bice and Donald Brown; two sisters, Letha Haas and Louise Keeney.

A celebration of Jessie’s life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. Steven P. Steiner

He was an avid hunter, bass fisherman, and was a lifetime member of Bass Pro.

Steven P. Steiner, 54, of Columbia passed away at his residence on September 25th, 2019. He was born in Columbia to Paul and Joyce Steiner and was a life long resident of this area. Steven attended Hempfield High School and worked for many years as a truck driver for Consolidated Freight, Yellow Freight, and Elite Energy. He was an avid hunter, bass fisherman, and was a lifetime member of Bass Pro.

In addition to his parents, Steven leaves behind his son, Zachary Price, companion of Amanda Flowers of Elizabethtown; his brother, Cliff, husband of Bonnie Steiner of Columbia; several nieces and nephews in Dauphine County.

I was born to the late Paul and Doris Lilley. I married Audrey Lilley (Ellinger) 47 years ago. We had a daughter Angela who married Scott Groff. Angela had our 2 grandkids Kaitlyn and Andrew Davis. We had a son Christopher who married Ashley (Scheaffer) who gave us our grandson Tyler. I have a brother Paul (Ed) who married Holly. I graduated from Manheim Central High School. I worked for Electron Energy Corp. for 33 years and was a volunteer firefight and fire police captain for Salunga Fire Co. I am also an Army veteran. “My journey on earth may be done, but my journey in Heaven has just begun.” Please send a donation to the Lymphoma Foundation. Joseph C. "Gabby" Hartmann

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was an avid outdoorsman who would bass fish using a fly rod!

Joseph (Gabby) Hartmann, age 94 and one of Columbia’s local legends passed away on Saturday, October 5th, at the VA Hospital in Lebanon. He was born in Paterson, NJ, son of Joseph A. and Leona (Schlegelmilch) Hartmann.

Gabby joined the Navy at age 16, only to be sent home until he turned 17. His first tour of duty was 3rd Division Anti-Submarine patrol, followed by amphibian training in Long Island and advanced training in Firth of Clyde in Scotland. He was then assigned to a British Warship, H.M.S. Capetown, and was one of the first to arrive at Omaha Beach on D-Day under cover of darkness (they were known as the suicide squad). Gabby was in the middle of all action for six months, then assigned to U.S.S. L.S.T. 5067 as the first allies to go to Norway. After his discharge in 1946, he owned Hartmann’s Café for 20 years. Gabby was an avid outdoorsman, fishing the river for bass using a fly rod, duck hunting and all wild game.


He is survived by his daughter, Kristie Lou Crosby of Douglasville, Georgia, and two sisters, Leona (Robert Stover) and Dolores (Clyde Butz) of Lancaster, and his nephew, Dave Wise, who was like the son he never had. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mary Lou (Kauffman) Hartmann.

At his request, there will be no service. He will be interred with his late wife at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Fred J. Howard, Jr, 89, of Columbia passed away on October 9th, 2019. He was born in Wattsville, AL to the late Gully and Rachael Howard.

Fred proudly served in the United States Army and retired from Armstrong Flooring. He treasured traveling with his family. Fred also enjoyed tending his garden and was a faithful member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church.

Fred leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Bernice Howard of Columbia; four children, Denise Howard of Houston, TX, Fred R., husband of Bobbie Joe Howard of Lancaster, Neil Howard of the Bronx, NY, James Howard of Columbia; five grandchildren, Matthew Howard, Tiffany Howard-Kreider, Nichole Caban, Leineal Howard, Lashaya Williams; his great grandchildren, Jahlil Howard, Aidan Kreider, Brianna, Elijah, and Zion Caban; a sister in law Marie Bessick and her daughter Sherlynn Bessick; several nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings.

Public visitation for Fred will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October, 15th, 2019 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. He will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, 222 S. 5th St, Columbia, PA 17512.

Hathaway D. Garner, 70, of Columbia passed away on October 2nd, 2019. He was born in Columbia to the late Marvin and Mae Garner and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Hathaway was a graduate of Eastern High School with the Class of 1968 where he was a member of the varsity wrestling team. He began his career at Caterpillar and eventually retired and went to work at Armstrong before once again retiring. Hathaway was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was known to be a family man who could tell a great story. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ.


Hathaway leaves behind his wife of almost 38 years, Susan Zurin Garner of Columbia; four children, Trevor Garner of Columbia, Laura Garner of Columbia, Todd Garner of York, Tammy Waples of York; six grandchildren, Ewan, Tyler, Corey, Noland, Skylar, Keira; five siblings, Marlene Long of Columbia, Bud, husband of Daun Garner of Yorkanna, Joanne Knaub of Wrightsville, Herb, husband of Pat Garner of East Prospect, Larry, husband of Joanne Garner of Glen Rock. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Charlie Garner.


A celebration of Hathaway’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9th, 2019 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. Nancy E. Ross passed away on September 30th, 2019. She was born in York County to the late Kenneth and Mabel Markey and was a lifetime resident of this area. Nancy was retired from the former ITT Grinnell where she was the first female supervisor, something she was very proud of. She was a member of VFW Post 2435 and the American Legion Post 372. Nancy was a member of New Fairview Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and treasured spending time with her family.

Nancy leaves behind her husband and companion of almost 40 years, Richard Ross of Windsor; her children, Timothy Kise, companion of Jody Miller of Columbia, Cheryl Kise of Garden City, GA, Bonita, wife of Patrick Sheehy of Live Oak, FL; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; her siblings, Ronald, husband of Mary Markey of Seven Valleys, Judy Markey of Dallastown, Lisa Shenberger of Dallastown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Gregory Kise.

Services for Nancy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5th, 2019 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. Pastor Paul Bentzel will officiate. John enjoyed boating on the Susquehanna River and treasured spending time with his family.

John Richard Forney, 72, of Columbia passed away suddenly on September 24th, 2019. He was born in Lancaster to the late Richard and Katherine Forney and was lifelong resident of this area.

John was a graduate of McCaskey High School with the Class of 1964 and worked for almost forty years with the City of Lancaster as a supervisor in the Water Department. He was a member of many social clubs throughout Columbia and was an exceptional dart player. John enjoyed boating on the Susquehanna River and Treasured spending time with his family.


John leaves behind his wife of fifty four years, Linda Forney of Columbia; his children, Tamara McLain of Columbia, Michael, husband of Cris Forney of Brownstown; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.


In accordance with John’s final wishes he will be cremated and services will be held at a later date and will be announced by his family. Ruth was a faithful member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Landisville where she taught Sunday School and served on various church committees.

Ruth L. Albright, 97, formerly of Landisville, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Mennonite Home where she had resided for the past eight years. She was the wife of the late H. Nelson Albright who preceded her in death in 1990. Born in Landisville, she was the daughter of the late Paul S. and Mary Trout Baker.

Following her graduation from Hempfield High School and Penn State University, Ruth was employed as a Hospital Dietitian at the New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center and Flowers Fifth Avenue Hospital before retiring from the Lancaster General Hospital. Ruth was a faithful member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Landisville where she taught Sunday School and served on various church committees.

She is survived by her sons, John N. husband of Deborah (Enders) Albright; Thomas J. husband of Lynn (Fisher) Albright; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her sister Mary E. "Beth" Dum, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 Brandt Blvd., Landisville, PA 17538 on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Barbara Caruana, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Private interment will follow in the Landisville Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ruth's memory to the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Lloyd W. McKee, 86, of Salunga passed away on September 13 th , 2019.
He was born in Mountville to the late Raymond, Sr. and Lydia McKee.

Lloyd proudly served in United States Army and worked at Alcoa for
twenty six years before his retirement. He enjoyed walking and was
proud of his lawn. Lloyd was known to be very patriotic and always had
a flag flown in his yard. He adored his family and treasured spending
time with them. Lloyd was a faithful member of Mount Joy Church of
God.

Lloyd leaves behind his wife of fifty one years, Bethel McKee of
Salunga; his daughters, Kathy, wife of Ken Cline of Belmont, NY and
Becky, wife of the late Robert Stauffer, II; eleven grandchildren and four
great grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy Miller and Lois Johns. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean
McKee in 1967; two sons, Barry and Lloyd E. McKee; five siblings.

Services for Lloyd will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September
17 th , 2019 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 247 Main St, Landisville,
PA 17538. Burial will follow at Salunga Brethren Cemetery. The family
will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. In lieu of

Kenneth Lloyd Wiederrecht, 82, of Landisville passed away at his residence on September 13, 2019. He was born in Millersville to the late Lloyd G. and Marie Wiederrecht and was lifelong resident of this area.

Kenneth was a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School with the Class of 1956 and proudly served in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He worked for forty three years as a printer at R.R. Donnelley before retiring in 1999. Kenneth was a family man who treasured time with his family and was a faithful member of Faith Bible Church.


Kenneth leaves behind his wife of fifty eight years, M. Naomi Wiederrecht of Landisville; his children, Kenneth L. Wiederrecht, II of Landisville, Daniel, husband of Christine Wiederrecht of Manheim, Rebecca, wife of David Lankford of York, David, husband of Melissa Wiederrecht of Cypress, TX; Eleven grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Barr and Kathleen Davis both of Lancaster.

Melvin C Brown Jr, 87, passed away Sept 11th, 2019. Born & raised in Columbia, PA, he was the husband of the late Dolores Brown. Melvin was the son of the late Melvin, Sr. and Alice Brown.

He is survived by his step children James Fisher, husband of Barbara, Victoria Sheirich wife of Joe, Randolf Fisher husband of Bonnie, Valerie Liebl wife of Frank, Dolores Kirchoff wife of Scott. Melvin is also survived by siblings John Brown, Robert Brown, Edwin Brown, Lougene Stevens, Barbara Kuhns, Sharon Strausbaugh, Alyce Brown. He was preceded in death by his sister Beatrice Siltzer and brother Donald Brown.

Melvin was a Navy veteran and served in the Korean conflict. He enjoyed wood working, oil painting, scrimshaw, making guns & knives. Melvin was a member of the Masons, VFW, Pequea Valley Sportsman club & Morris Run. He drove steel truck until his retirement.

There will be no funeral but a celebration of life at a later date.

Edward E. Springer, Sr., 89, formerly of Columbia, PA died at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown on September 2, 2019. He was the husband of the late Janet Mummau Springer who preceded him in death in 1987. Born in Columbia he was the son of the late Edward J. and Gladys Fry Springer.

Ed was President and Vice-President of the former Columbia Laundry & Machine Co. from 1947 – 1975. He then owned and operated Springer's Machine Co. from 1975 – 1982. He returned to Columbia Laundry & Machine Co. in 1982 – 1988. He then served as a self-employed Architectural Draftsman from 1988 – 2002. Ed was a Lutheran by faith. He was a member of the Columbia/ Middletown Elks Lodge #1074, Columbia Lodge #286 F&AM, and the Corinthian Royal Arch Chapter. Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Ed's hobbies included woodworking and the love of flying, earning his private pilot's license in the 70's.

Surviving is a Daughter: Sandra L. wife of William Keyser of Columbia and Sons: Edward E. Jr. husband of Chandra E. Springer of York, PA and Dennis E. husband of Deborah Springer of Mount Joy, PA, 16 Grandchildren and 6 Great-Grandchildren. Also surviving is a Sister: Jane wife of Dale Vera of Wrightsville, PA. He was predeceased by a Brother: John "Jack" Springer.

Marjorie T. Heim, 99, of Columbia, passed peacefully on September 4, 2019 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. She was the last of her immediate family having been preceded by her husband, Charles F. Heim, her parents and sisters.

As an active member of the Columbia Presbyterian Church, she was an elder and served on many church committees.

Mary L. Menko, 89, formerly of Columbia, PA died on September 2,2019 at Luther Care in Lititz, PA. She was the wife of the late Eugene M. Menko who preceded her in death in 1981. Born in Enola, PA she was the daughter of the late Paul and Myrtle Holland Haldeman.

Mary was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She graduated from Columbia High School Class of 1948. Mary helped with the faschnachts as did her late husband for may years at Holy Trinity. Mary was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and also helped at the Rectory. Mary did many hobbies making pine cone wreaths, crocheting, egg decorating, flower arrangements and gardening. She loved flowers.

She is survived by two daughters: Beverly Anne wife of Ronald Kalman of Red Lion, PA and Marcella wife of Fred Shoemaker of Lancaster, PA., 4 lovely grandchildren: David of Reinholds, PA., Adrienne of Hawaii, Brandon and Courtney Seace of Lancaster, PA, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her Companion: Paul K. Seibert, brothers: Paul and Robert Haldeman and sisters: Janet Fischer, Betty Edmond and Estella Lowry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 4th & Cherry Streets, Columbia, PA on Monday, September 9, 2019 at 12:00 Noon with Rev. Fr. Stephen P. Kelley as Celebrant. There will be a visitation with the family from 11:00 am until the time of the Mass. Final Commendation and Farewell will be in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
