Dennis L. Watterson, Jr. “DJ”, 36, of Columbia passed away suddenly on July 29th, 2020. He was born in Lancaster to Dennis, Sr. and Tracy Brady Watterson and was a lifelong resident of this area. DJ was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 2002 and proudly served in the United States Army. Most recently he was the kitchen manager at Sheetz in Mount Joy. DJ loved watching sports and was an avid Miami Hurricanes, St. Louis Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, and golf fan. He enjoyed supporting his family at Columbia High School Football games and also making people laugh with his sense of humor. DJ was an excellent cook and grilling was his specialty.

DJ leaves behind his parents, Dennis, Sr. and Tracy Watterson; his brother, Christopher “Hoagie” Watterson; two nieces, Mackenzie M. Watterson and Lillian L. Wickenheiser all of Columbia.

Samuel L. Gottschall, 65, of Lancaster passed away on July 27th, 2020. He was born in Columbia to the late Paul T. and Ethel V. Roberts Gottschall. Sam was a graduate of Donegal High School in 1972 and spent his life as a well-known cosmetologist and educator at Empire Beauty School, Lancaster County Career & Technology Center in Willow Street, and J.P. McCaskey High School. He was affectionately known as “Mr. Sam” by the countless students whose lives he touched throughout his career.

In his younger years, Sam was active in the Columbia and York Little Theaters and the Fulton Opera House. His most enjoyable role was playing the Lion, in the Wizard of Oz. He had the singing voice of an Angel.

He had a jovial comedian like personality that would make anyone laugh, his beautiful smile was contagious and his big teddy bear type hugs were like no other. He just loved life to the fullest extent, no matter what health issues he was forced to face.

He adored his cats and loved spending time at Rehoboth Beach.

Sam leaves behind his devoted partner of six years, Dave Boas of Lancaster; his favorite niece, Lisa M. Gottschall of Lancaster; nephew, Don Lucas, Jr. of Marietta; sister-in-law, Tina Gottschall of Marietta; fur babies, Little Girl and Charlie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Randy L. Gottschall.

Robert Crosby, 80, of Manheim Township, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2020. Bob was the devoted husband of Donna (Coffman) Crosby for more than 58 years. He was the loving father to Craig Crosby, of Philadelphia, and Kedren Crosby, married to Sarah Colantonio, of Lancaster, and grandfather to Tom and Therese Toczek, of Lancaster. He is survived by his brother, Richard, of Jefferson, Georgia, married to Sauni.

Many of his hobbies involved spending time in the great outdoors, including hunting, gardening and relaxing at a vacation spot in Massanutten, Va. He was a member of the Isaac Walton Conservation League, Red Rose Chapter, and enjoyed caring for their land north of Lancaster. He also was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, having grown up in western Pa.

In his professional life, Bob served as Vice President of Development for Lancaster General Hospital from 1977 to 1995. He also served as President of the Rotary Club of Lancaster and as a member of Rotary in Myerstown and Cleveland, Ohio. In Myerstown, he helped Evangelical School of Theology with its development efforts. Prior to moving to Lancaster, he worked in development for Cleveland State University and prior to that, the University of Findlay (Ohio) from where he had graduated in 1961. He was a Fellow of the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE).

Bob was a member of the Church of God of Landisville for more than 40 years, serving as a regular Sunday School teacher, on the church’s Finance Team and as President of the Administrative Council.

Helen E. Fry, 90, passed away on July 20th, 2020. She was born in Lancaster to the late Henry S. and Stella Frysinger May and was a lifelong resident of Columbia. Helen attended Donegal High School and worked for thirty five years with RCA in Lancaster before her retirement. She adored her family and treasured spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Helen will be missed for her personality and her famous Easter candies.

Helen leaves behind her daughter, Paula, wife of Henry Duke of Columbia; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Helen was the last of seven siblings and also leaves behind a large extended family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Fry in 2006 and three sons, Chester, Richard, and Thomas. 

A public visitation for Helen will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24th, 2020 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. Steven Joseph Geiger 56, of Leola Pa went to be with Jesus on June 30th. A Service will be held for him at Memorial Lake on July 19th. He was a graduate of Hempfield High School and he served in the United States Army . He Retired from the Dept of Labor & Industry.  Steven enjoyed collecting sports cards and sports memorabilia, and playing the lottery. He was preceded in death by his parents Philip E. Geiger and Marjorie C. Williams Geiger and four brothers , Gary Lynn , James William, John Christopher and Tim J. He is survived by a brother Philip E Geiger of Pittston Pa and a sister Brenda L Geiger of Windsor Pa and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Minerva R. “Dutch” Brommer, 99, formerly of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at Paramount Senior Living. She was the wife of the late Richard A. Brommer with whom she was married 70 years until his death in 2010. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Charles Jr. and Minnie Meyer Bachman.

A devoted member of the Columbia United Methodist Church, she served as a Church Nursery Attendant, Communion Stewardess, was a choir member for over 40 years and attended the Ladies Bible Class Sunday School. At one time she worked as a clerk at the Susquehanna Glass Factory.

Most important to Dutch was spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Frank R. husband of Gloria Brommer; Judith A. wife of Thomas Wissler; Deborah K. wife of William Ansalvish; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. The last of her immediate family she was preceded in death by her siblings, Lester, Irene, LeRoy, Harry, Evelyn, Joseph, Abraham, Pauline, Mae, Charles Jr. and Betty.

Funeral services will be held at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 510 Walnut Street, Columbia, PA 17512 on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Grubbs, officiating. Interment in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church on hour prior to the service. Kindly omit flowers. David A. “Mappy” Mapstone, Sr., 77, of Wrightsville, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at home. He was the husband of Kerry Flanagan Mapstone with whom they would have celebrated 41 years of marriage this July 21st. Born in Sunbury, he was the son of the late Frank and Ruth Long Mapstone.

A graduate of Eastern High School, Class of 1960, he retired in 2008 after 18 years of service from Graham Recycling, York, where he worked in the maintenance department. David also served his country in the Army National Guard.

In addition to his wife is his son, David A. Jr., husband of Renee Mapstone; two grandchildren, Adelyn and Tyler; brother, Frank husband of Donna Mapstone and nephews, Robert and Carl Mapstone.

Ed had a passion for Columbia history, boating, and was a car enthusiast. He was a graduate of Columbia High School and Elizabethtown College. He was in the US Marine Corps. He followed his passion for marketing through his working career.

James Carter Harris, 74, of Columbia passed away on July 8th, 2020. He was born in Trenton, NJ to the late James, Sr. and Ethel Palmer. James served in the U.S. Navy, was a graduate of William and Mary College and went on to study horology at Bowman Technical School. He continued on to be a watch and clock maker and publish books on horology and also served as a curator for the National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia. James enjoyed model trains and would volunteer at the National Toy Train Museum in Strasburg. 

James leaves behind his three sons, Scott Harris of Richmond, VA, Tyler, husband of Brigette Harris of Harrisburg, Matthew, husband of Ashley Thompson of Wrightsville; two grandchildren, Evan and Cory Harris of Richmond, VA.

Joane attended and graduated from Donegal High School and worked for Doc Hinkle Egg Dye before becoming a homemaker. She enjoyed baking, collecting antiques, and was a regular at Hinkle’s Restaurant. Joane was a faithful and devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Marietta. She adored spending time with her family, especially her niece and nephews Jess, Dylan, and Jordan.

Joane leaves behind her sons, Joseph, husband of Christine Ott of Marietta, Michael, husband of Miriam Ott of Willow Street; two sisters, Jane, wife of Donald Mimnall of Washington Boro, Mildred, wife of the late James Millar of Columbia; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband George “Duck” Jefferson Ott, Jr. in 2017.

Alex J. "Joe" Farley, 68 of 404 Chestnut St., Columbia, PA passed away on June 28, 2020 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the companion of Jane Saxinger for 46 years. Born in Columbia, PA on May 2, 1952 he was the son of the late William and Anne Reese Cannon. Joe was a retired construction worker for Local #158. He was an avid fisherman and Kansas City Chiefs fan. Joe was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church in Columbia, PA.

In addition to his companion, surviving are sisters: Jochebet Farley, Terrie Edmond, and Deborah Cannon, all of Columbia, PA, brother: Jeffrey Cannon of Lancaster, PA, godson: Terry Farley of Georgia, goddaughter: Shalondra Hartman of Columbia, PA, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by the following siblings: Melvin Cannon, Gardner Cannon, Charles Farley, Linda Farley, Catherine Jones, Walter Farley, Larry Farley, Michael Cannon, Anthony Cannon, and Kevin Cannon.

David E. Glick, 89, of Mountville, passed away on June 26, 2020 at his residence. He was the husband of Pricilla Jane Bragg Glick with whom he will be married 52 years this December. Born in East Lampeter, he was the son of the late Amos U. and Anna Mary Esch Glick.

David was a self-employed carpenter who enjoyed auctions, repairing clocks, deer hunting and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife are his step children, Robert Murry, (Midge); Glenda Perry (Charles, Sr.); seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren and brothers, Elmer J. and Levi E. Glick. He was preceded in death by his step daughter Sarah Murry, two sisters and three brothers.

Shirley Cummings Detz, daughter of Ruth Billett Cummings, passed away on June 27, 2020. Born and raised in Marietta, Shirley was born on July 28, 1935 and graduated salutatorian from Marietta High School.

She was married to the late Charles A. Detz, Sr. on July 17, 1954. Charlie passed away in 2002.

Shirley worked as a waitress in the 1950's-1960's and at the Lancaster County Assessment Office in the 1970s. She was an Executive Secretary at the Columbia Chamber of Commerce in the 1980's and a bank teller at the former Dauphin Deposit Bank.

She served on the Columbia Republican Committee of the 4th ward in the 1960's.

She is survived by daughter Mary Anne Funk, wife of Curtis Funk, Phoenix, Arizona, son Charles A. Detz, of Huntsville, Alabama and son Bruce A. Detz, husband of Beth of Columbia. She also has 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Shirley loved to cook for her family and friends. She was well known for her Sunday dinners and her delicious cakes. Her hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, and gardening. She loved animals, especially German Shepherds. She also loved to talk with friends and family for hours.

Shirley loved her job and worked for more than 20 years at Wyeth Labs before her eventual retirement. She also enjoyed frequent girl weekends to Williamsburg, VA and family vacations to Myrtle Beach, SC. Shirley adored her family and treasured spending time with her grandchildren. She will be missed especially for her wit and sense of humor.

Shirley leaves behind her husband of almost 56 years, Stephen Staman of Columbia; two daughters, Heidi Staman of Marietta, Carol, wife of Paul Walters of Marietta; two grandchildren, Justin Kise and Eve Jeffries both of Marietta; three great grandchildren; two siblings, Sandra Ambrose of York and Albert Trimmer of Dover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three siblings, Wanda, Mary Ann, and Charles.

Richard F. Frick, 63 of 164 Riverfront Rd., Columbia, PA, passed away at his residence on June 24, 2020. He was the loving husband of Josetta "Jo" Boyles Frick with whom he celebrated 45 years of marriage on June 14th. Born in Marietta, PA on August 7, 1956, he was the son of the late Richard F. and Grace Oster Frick.

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Rick was a contractor for 18 years and enjoyed remodeling and fixing homes and buildings. In 2004 he and his wife Jo along with their daughter Cherie opened Fricke Hardware store in Columbia. Rick enjoyed playing cards with his Wednesday and Sunday card groups, going to the casino, watching his grandsons playing football and basketball and loved riding his motorcycle.

In addition to his wife, surviving is a daughter: Cherie wife of Jon Bernstein, his two grandsons Seth and Trey Bernstein, sisters: Linda Kaylor and Penny "Nickle" wife of Andy Haines, a brother: David Frick companion of Wendy. He was preceded in death by a daughter: Rikki Jo Frick and a sister: Joan Weaver.

A viewing will be held from the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Monday, June 29, 2020 from 10:00AM – 12 noon. A Life Well Lived 

Ruby V. Jones, 79, of Bladensburg, Maryland, passed away suddenly on June 17, 2020. Her Almighty God sent His angels to bring Ruby to her Final Resting Place. 

Ruby was born on March 27, 1941 in Columbia, PA, to the late Minor and Kathleen (Cannon) Brown. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1960. After high school, Ruby had many careers, including being a master barber, tool and die maker, and City of Lancaster clerk, before finally retiring as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Lanham, Maryland. Her four beloved children, Mechelle, Patrice, Scott and Stacey blessed her life tremendously. Ruby was a compassionate God-loving woman, who loved her family and treasured quality time with them, especially her grandchildren. 

Ruby relished spending hours in nature and was very talented and creative. She enjoyed drawing, painting, and in later years, coloring in her adult coloring books. She loved working with her hands. In fact, she was very facile with tools; she built furniture, cabinets, stools, and lamps from scrapped materials. She also loved singing gospel music and reading her Bible. Sister Ruby was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Highland Park, Landover, MD.

Ruby leaves behind to cherish her memory her three children, Mechelle Jones of San Francisco, CA, Scott Jones (Sunshine) of Ewing Township, New Jersey, Stacey Jones (Leonard Caston, fiancé) of Lanham, Maryland, ex-son-in law David Cattell of Wilkinsburg, Pa, son- in-law, Alfred Caraway of College Park, Maryland, six grandchildren, Andrew, Timothy, LaShonda, Jannai, Corey, and Chase, a great grandson, Khalid, three siblings, Emma Green and Wesley Brown, both of Columbia, PA, and Elaine Poindexter (Jerry) of Kissimmee, FL, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family. 

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Minor Brown and Kathleen Cannon Brown, daughter, Patrice Jones Caraway, and four siblings, Geneva Makle, Eugene Cannon, Cleon Cannon, and Nathaniel Brown. 

Ruby generously dedicated her life to her family, thus leaving them with riches untold in death. She will be remembered for a lifetime because of her warm spirit and sweet personality. Ruby’s legacy of love and faith in God will guide her loved ones as they carry the torch to keep her memory alive.

Verna K. Martin, “Freddie”, 94, formerly of Ironville passed away on June 20th, 2020. She was born in Columbia to the late Charles and Ella Swartz Keller and was a lifelong resident of this area. Freddie was a graduate of the former Wrightsville High School with the Class of 1943 and worked at Baylinson Silk Mill and Little Prince before becoming a homemaker. She was a lifetime and faithful member of Ironville United Methodist Church where she was active in the church choir and was the church organist for over thirty years. She enjoyed playing the piano, organ, and singing. Some of Freddie’s other favorite activities were spending time with her family, playing sequence and pinochle, making crafts and doing word puzzles, and reading Nora Roberts novels.

Freddie leaves behind her son, Bob, husband of Brenda Martin of Red Lion; a grandson, Scott Martin of Wilmington, DE; a granddaughter, Kelly, wife of Dan Kmett of Mount Wolf; three great grandchildren, Emily Kmett, Collin Kmett, and Ethan Martin; her sister, Dorothy Pich of Chattanooga, TN; two nieces, Sandy, wife of Tim Miller, Peggy Hardwick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Martin, Sr. in 1980; her sons, Donald and Richard Martin; her sister, Evelyn Keller and three infant brothers.

A visitation for Freddie will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27th, 2020 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. If attending please wear a mask and practice social distancing. A private family graveside service will follow at Ironville Cemetery. A full celebration of Freddie’s life will be held at a later date and will be announced by her family. Lois Young Mummaw, 91, of Columbia passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on June 21st, 2020. She was born in Columbia to the late John W. and Mary Rettew Young and was a lifelong resident of Columbia. Lois was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 1946 and was the school secretary at Farmdale Elementary School for over thirty years. She was a lifetime and faithful member of Ironville United Methodist Church and served as their pianist and organist for over twenty-five years. Lois adored her family and treasured spending time with them at the shores of Avalon, NJ.

Lois leaves behind her husband of almost seventy-one years, Alvin Mummaw of Columbia; her children, Kathy Mummaw of Conestoga, Keith Mummaw, husband of Donna Poucel of Gig Harbor, WA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Clair Young.

A public visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 26th, 2020 at the Ironville United Methodist Church, 4020 Holly Dr, Columbia, PA 17512. Rev. Carlos Manuel Torres, 81, of Mountville passed away on June 15th, 2020. He was born in Bayamon, PR to the late Augustine and Rosalina Torres. Rev. Carlos grew up in Puerto Rico before moving to New York City at age 18. He proudly served in the United States Army Reserve and after his service was a bus driver for the New York Bus Service for 25 years before his retirement. Rev. Carlos then became an ordained minister with the Pentecostal Church. His ministry included missionary work in international countries such as South Korea and Venezuela. He then became the founding minister of Free the Captives Prison Ministry. Rev. Carlos adored his family and treasured spending time with them.

Rev. Carlos is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elga Torres of Mountville; thirteen children, Francisco, Annette, Luis, Demetrios, Joel, Jeremiah, Dora, Peter, Carmen, Maria, Fernando, Carlos, Jr., Emanuel; eighteen grandchildren; his brother, Hector Torres; several nieces and nephews and a large extended family.

Services for Rev. Carlos will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24th, at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 12:00 p.m. until service time. If attending please wear a mask and practice social distancing. He will be laid to rest at a later date. Skip’s joys in life were many; he loved spending time with his family and he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed 57 years of marriage with the love of his life, Linda (Everly) Keim. Skip enjoyed fishing on the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers, and hunting with his lifelong friend Jim Burger.

Cornelius J. Keim, III

Cornelius (Skip) Joseph Keim III, beloved husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa and friend passed away peacefully at age 79, and entered into eternal peace on May 10, 2020.

  Skip was born in Columbia, Pa, to the late Cornelius and Helen (Campbell) Keim. He graduated from Columbia High School and served his country proudly aboard the USS Harlan R Dixon. Following service to his country, Skip earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Old Dominion University and attained his Certified Public Accounting license. He was a long time business associate with the Walborn Shambach Accounting firm.

Skip’s joys in life were many; he loved spending time with his family and he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed 57 years of marriage with the love of his life, Linda (Everly) Keim. Skip enjoyed fishing on the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers, and hunting with his lifelong friend Jim Burger.  He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and volunteered at Good Shepherd Catholic School serving lunches to the students and delivering bread to the Bethesda Mission.

In addition to his loving wife Linda, Skip is survived by his three children; Letitia Luvison (Tom), of Lewisberry, PA; Neal (Donna-Jean), of Cary, NC; Janice Duquette (David), of Reading, PA., and eight grandchildren; Kyle (Samantha), Emily, and Sara Luvison; Joshua and Matthew Keim; Derek, Isaac, and Nathan Duquette; and three great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Reagan and Grant Luvison.   He is also survived by three sisters Bernadette (Jerry) Evans, Elizabeth (Lester) Graham and Odilia (Jack) McDonald.

Skip was preceded in death by parents Cornelius Jr. and Helen Keim, infant brother Joachim Keim, brother Gerard Keim, and sisters Maryanne Reisinger and Mauritia Murry.

Skip’s family would like to express their thanks to the caregivers at Arden Courts of Susquehanna for their compassion and kindness during his stay with them.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church 409 Cherry Street, Columbia, PA 17512 at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 26th with graveside service to follow at Laurel Hills Cemetery in Columbia.
