Leon Wilson Bughman, 75, passed away on April 26, 2022.

Born November 28, 1946, Leon graduated from Columbia High School in 1964.

After serving as a Marine in Vietnam, Leon returned home to Lancaster and married his sweetheart, Audrey Smith, on April 6, 1968. During their blessed 54 years of marriage, the couple raised two sons, Eric and Marc.

An avid outdoorsman, Leon enjoyed hunting the woods of Pennsylvania, fishing the lakes of Canada, and relaxing on the beaches of Mexico.

He was a calm and judicious leader who worked most of his career at Bulova Technologies before retiring from Sechan Electronics.

Leon was predeceased by father, Herbert, mother, Dorothy, and brother, Stewart.

Cherishing his memory are wife, Audrey, son Eric and his wife Amanda and their son Logan, and son Marc and his husband Greg.

Thomas T. Carter, 65, of Lancaster, died peacefully and unexpectedly at home on Monday, April 25, 2022. He was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, on June 15, 1956 to Hollis J. and Gloria (Iannetta) Carter. 

Tom was a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of American in Hyde Park, NY, and worked as executive chef at fine restaurants in Philadelphia and Lancaster until he retired. He also, for a time, had his own successful restaurant in Atlantic City called Just Us Three, preparing his specialty of fish and seafood. Tom loved the beach, Walt Disney World, Williamsburg, camping, the mountains, fishing, reading, cats, and cooking for his family and friends. He was loved by his family and will be missed very much. 

Tom is survived by his daughter, Sarah Garner (married to Reid); son, Ben Carter; granddaughters, Addie, Etta, and Scottie; brother, Hollis (married to Jim); and ex-wife, Tracie Carter. His second family in life were his close and dear friends Kurt and Sandy Chillas and family. He is predeceased by his parents Hollis and Gloria.

Patricia Ann Smith, age 98, a long-time resident of Columbia, PA, died peacefully surrounded by her loving children on April 20, 2022.  Born on Saint Patrick’s Day, her mother named her after the patron saint of Ireland.  She was the daughter of the late Verna A. Schlossman, wife of Ellsworth M. Schlossman. 

Patricia was the loving wife of the late Leo J. Smith who predeceased her in death on March 22, 1990. Following graduation from Columbia High School with the highest GPA in typing class, she began work in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Armstrong World Industries.

Patricia and Leo purchased land and built their home in Columbia where they raised their seven children and lived for more than 70 years.  They were past hosts of the Columbia Home and Garden Tour.  They served as presenting couples for Pre-Cana Encounters for engaged couples preparing for marriage.  They shared an interest in formal gardening, world travel, including a lifetime of summers along the New Jersey Bay, and politics.

Patricia was an avid antique collector with a love and interest in homemaking and interior decorating, honed to understated perfection.  She was an expert baker and cook and enjoyed entertaining her bridge and pinochle clubs.  She was renowned for enchanting family and friends with exquisitely wrapped gifts and always looked forward to holidays spent with family.  Above and beyond, was her exceptional devotion to her children and grandchildren throughout their childhood and adult lives.

Patricia was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Her past affiliations include the Columbia Historical Society, St. Anne’s Retirement Community Auxiliary, Columbia Hospital Auxiliary, Cherry Red Ladies, Alter Rosary Society and Holy Trinity Fastnacht Bake.

Patricia is survived by her son, Stephen S. Smith, of Lower Gwynedd, PA (wife, Dolores R., died in 2020), fiancé of Jennifer Cleary, Barbara L. Giffuni, of New York, NY (husband Vincent J., died in 2018), Yvonne M. Yohe, wife of Wayne A., of Columbia, Annetta V. Cracraft (husband of Stuart M., died in 2021), Gregory T. Smith, fiancé of Aline L. Barilar, and Patricia A. Schmidt, fiancé of Herb L. Miller, all of Lancaster, PA.  She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.  She was predeceased in death by her son, Leo J. Smith, Jr., who died in 2019 and was wed to Dawn M. at the time of his death.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Patricia will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 29, 2022 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St, Columbia, PA 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. She will be entombed with her family at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. Saranne Lydon, 66, of Columbia, PA passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Bowers, Jr., and Caroline Hogentogler Bowers. She was the wife of Michael Lydon, Jr. 

Saranne graduated from Columbia High School and worked as a Title Clerk for Town and Country Leasing. There was nothing she loved more than being with her three grandchildren. She also adored her dogs. Saranne enjoyed spending days on the river and going shopping with her friends. She was the type of person who loved getting together with people. She was light-hearted, loved to laugh and make others laugh. Saranne would strike up a conversation with anyone. She was also known to crack jokes out of nowhere, and didn’t mind being the subject of a roasting session by her family. She just had a way of making the lives of those around her brighter. 

Saranne is survived by her husband, Michael; her son, Jared Keim; her daughter, Alexandra Lydon; grandchildren, Andrew, Harrison, and Eddison; and brother, Gregory Bowers. In addition to her father, Saranne was preceded in death by her son, Jason Keim.   

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in Columbia, PA. Timothy attended Columbia High School and proudly served in the United States Army. He was a self-employed carpenter by trade who loved the outdoors and being on the Susquehanna River. Timothy enjoyed Old Milwaukee and spending time with his family who will miss him for his sense of humor.

Timothy leaves behind his children, Michelle Harmon and Timothy Scott Murphy, Jr. both of Columbia; four grandchildren and one great grandchild; three sisters, Jeannette, wife of Mick Metzger of Potter County, Pam, wife of Russell Hanes, Sr. of Franklin County, Kelly, wife of Henry Brommer of Columbia; several nieces and nephews and a large extended family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Austin Murphy and two brothers, Kenneth Murphy, Jr. and Vincent Murphy, Sr.

Vicki was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 1966. She enjoyed bird watching, her television shows, and was known to tell a good story. Vicki adored her family and treasured spending time with them, especially her grandchildren.

James J. McCarty, 86, formerly of Murphy's Hollow, Wrightsville, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022 at Masonic Village where he had resided for the past five years. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Thomas H. and Elizabeth Smith McCarty.

Jim retired in 1999 after more than 35 years of service from the telephone company where he was employed as a lineman. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Columbia. In addition, he belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council 2294 and the Columbia-Middletown Elks Lodge 1074.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Sandra Gardels, Dover, DE and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his siblings, Tom McCarty, Mary Elizabeth Wagner, Margaret Ann Kauffman, Patricia Horn and Micki Stettler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, PA on Friday, April 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Stephen Kelley, Celebrant. Robert ‘Bob’ Sechrist, 71, a proud and honored veteran, was surrounded by his wife and three daughters at the time of his entrance into Heaven on April 17, 2022. The oldest child of Harold and Margaret (Demoise) Sechrist, Bob grew up in Columbia, Pa before enlisting in the United States Army where he served in Bad Kissingen, Germany in the Vietnam War.

Robert was born on February 18, 1951. He married Teresa Ann Rineer, his beloved wife and soulmate, on November 25, 1974. They resided in Columbia for most of their lives where they went on to raise their children. Robert completed his working career at HDJ Co Inc. in Lancaster, Pa in 2010. Prior to his employment at HDJ, Bob was employed as the Plant Foreman for 27 years at R&S Manufacturing where he met and befriended many people who knew him well. 

His loved ones will remember most- his love and dedication to his family, strong work ethic, patriotism, love for music, especially Elvis Presley, and his joy in deer hunting.

Robert Sechrist is survived by his wife, Teresa (Rineer) Sechrist, and his daughters, Barbara Flowers, wife to James of Mount Joy, Pa, Tammy Sechrist, life partner to Jesse Boyer of York, Pa, and Sherry Welsh, wife to Joseph of Columbia, Pa. In addition, he leaves 9 grandchildren (Kyrstin, Ashley, Hallee, Haileigh, Justin, Samantha, James, Harley, and Brandan) and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also leaving behind his remaining siblings, Carol Sullivan, wife of Daniel, Stephanie Duppert, Charles Sechrist, husband of Amy, and Donald Sechrist, life partner of Beverly May. Finally, he leaves behind countless family members, longtime friends and acquaintances who have celebrated and mourned life events beside him.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Harold Marshall Sechrist, and his siblings, Geraldine Lowery, Betty Aller, and Catherine Spackman. 

Services will take place on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. located at 519 Walnut Street in Columbia, Pa. A viewing will begin at 10:00 am, followed by a funeral service honoring Robert’s life at 11:00 am, and graveside services at Laurel Hill Cemetery immediately after. All friends and family are welcome to attend in this, the final farewell of Robert Sechrist.

Pall Bearers will lovingly include his daughters, son-in laws, and grandsons.

Chet served in the United States Army for several years before settling down with his family in Columbia.

Chester R. Arnold III, 61 of Columbia passed away March 31st, 2022, surrounded by his children after a hard-fought battle with an illness. He was the son of both the late Chester R. Arnold Jr. and Amaryllis Arnold (Gipe).
Chet served in the United States Army for several years before settling down with his family in Columbia. He worked as a tow motor operator at Donsco for 20+ years and then continued doing the same job at Intellicore printing company for 10+ years till he was no longer able to work. He took pride in the work he did.
Chet will be missed by his four children Chester G. Arnold, Dorothy Arnold, Timothy Arnold and Samantha Arnold: his two daughters in law Summer Small and Kimmy Yingst. Chet was blessed to be called Grandpa/ Pop Pop by his four grandchildren Azalea, Kirra, Tim Jr and Kendall. He also loved his fur grandkids Grou, Georgia, Zara and Jax. He is also survived by his brother Alan and sister Colleen along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Chet was a man of few words until it came to talking about his kids and especially his grandchildren. He proudly served his country and worked hard his whole life. One of his favorite things in life was getting to play with his grandkids. He loved his family and grandchildren more than anything.

James W. Jones, 65, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2022. Born in Columbia, PA, he was the son of the late John W. and Miriam C. (Rupp) Jones. He was the husband of Cathy (Smaling) with whom he was married for 46 years. 

Jim was a 1974 graduate and stand-out wrestler at Columbia High School. He also attended and wrestled at Elizabethtown College. He worked for 35 years at Armstrong World Industries and retired at the age of 55. Jim was a lifetime member of the Owls, enjoyed fishing and boating on the Susquehanna River, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was frequently spotted going for a run around town, which was one of his favorite pastimes. Jim will be remembered as a hard worker, great provider, and an incredible husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed beyond words. 

Jim is survived by his wife, Cathy; his son, James J. Jones, husband of Jennifer; his daughter, Jennifer E. Albright, wife of Justin; grandchildren, Ava Jones, Cash Jones, Ethan Albright, Addison Albright, and grand puppy, Izzy; sisters, Bonnie O’Neil and Doris Weisser; and brother, John Jones, husband of Deborah. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Thom O’Neil and Bob Weisser.   

A memorial service for Jim will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in Columbia, PA. Diane L. Flanagan, 62, of Marietta, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at home. She was the wife of Shawn P. Flanagan with whom she was married 40 years. Born in Dade City, FL, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Jean Nethery Deatrick.

A 1978 graduate of Donegal High School, Diane was employed for over 35 years as an insurance professional retiring in 2010 from the Donegal Mutual Insurance Company, Marietta as a large loss specialist. A devoted member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Columbia, she served as a lector, Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Communion, volunteered at the annual Lenten fish fry and was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She enjoyed gardening, afternoon tea and spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her husband Shawn she is survived by her two sons, Kevin, husband of Jess Flanagan; Andy, husband of Rachael Gemperline; grandsons, Sammy and Connor, and her sister, Steph, wife of Ron Young.

Mary C. “Chris” Smeltzer, 65, of Wrightsville, passed away at home on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Donald “Iver” and Mary (Peters) Smeltzer.  

Chris was known for her love of wearing lots of jewelry, especially her favorite yellow duck ring. She enjoyed country music; her favorite song being “Elvira” by The Oak Ridge Boys. She was often seen listening to music while sitting in a rocking chair on her front porch. Chris found joy in pulling tickets and going out to eat, and she adored the color pink. She was a life member of Susquehanna Fish and Game in Wrightsville. 

Chris is survived by her sister, Sandy Gipe, wife of Bob; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Linda Wren and Joan Williams; her brother, Bob Williams; and her dog, Pudge. 

A funeral service for Chris will be held at 11AM on Saturday, April 9th, 2022 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut Street, Columbia. There will be a viewing one hour prior. Randy L. Richardson, Sr., 66, of Mountville, died on Friday, April 1, 2022 at Penn Medicine LGH. He was the husband of Sue Burger Richardson with whom he was married 50 years. Born Columbia, he was the son of the late Charles and Hildred Geesey Whiteman.

A graduate of Eastern Area High School, Class of 1973, Randy retired as a truck driver for Grocery Outlets and previously drove for other area trucking companies. He was a member of the Methodist faith and belonged to the Harley Owners Group, enjoyed camping and most of all loved his family especially his grandchildren and doggies, Tugger, Maya, Mia and his grand dog Nittany.

In addition to his wife are his children, Randy L., Jr. husband of Lisa Richardson; Mindy wife of Jay Shellenberger; two grandchildren, Carley and Caleb; brothers, Robert husband of Tamara Richardson; Greg husband of Dee Richardson and sister Robin wife of Eugene Gingrich.

Cynthia Mae Dougherty, 65, of Landisville passed away suddenly on March 28, 2022 from injuries sustained from a car accident. She was born in Lancaster to the late Chester and B. Alice Grossman and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Cynthia was a graduate of Penn Manor High school with the Class of 1975. She was a real people person who worked as a waitress for her adult life. Cynthia loved God and enjoyed sitting outside and reading. She also loved her family fiercely and adored her grandchildren whom she treasured spending time with.

Cynthia leaves behind her children, Jennifer (Kline) Santiago, companion of Andrew Sherrard of Columbia, Jessica, wife of Shane Wagner of Landisville, Michael Kline of Columbia; six grandchildren, Shai Renee, Jason, Jamison, Serena (Ethan), Julian, Haley; one great grandchild, Mia; one brother, Barry Grossman of Lancaster.

In honor of Cynthia’s final wishes, there will be no formal services. In lieu of flowers, please consider doing an act of kindness for someone.

Nancy’s nursing career spanned 49-1/2 years.

Memorial service for Nancy will be held promptly at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at Wrightsville Presbyterian Church, 205 N. 2nd St, Wrightsville, PA 17368.

She will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in a private ceremony at a later date.

Nancy C. Crumling, 87, of Lititz passed away on March 26, 2022. She was born in Columbia to the late Harold and Dorothy Burg Crumling.

Nancy was a graduate of the former Wrightsville High School. She then attended the University of Pennsylvania where she got her bachelor’s degree in nursing and then her master’s in nursing administration and research. Nancy was a lifelong member of the Alumni Association of the University of Pennsylvania and member of Sigma Theta Tau, XI Chapter, and the Van Rensselaer Chapter 256. Her nursing career spanned 49-1/2 years. During this time, she worked for the Philadelphia VA Hospital, Albany Medical Center, she opened and worked at Hershey Medical Center, Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. She served as the Vice President of Nursing at Wilkes-Barre General and Canton Potsdam Hospitals. She was also the Assistant Director of Nursing at Masonic Homes and then closed her nursing career after eleven years with Philhaven. Nancy was a lifetime member and elder at Wrightsville Presbyterian Church where she was a former clerk of session. She was active in Presbyterian Women, played in the chime and adult choirs, and was the parish nurse. She was also active on the mission committee and participated in four mission trips to New Orleans. Nancy was a member of the Order of the Eastern star and a lifelong member of Historic Wrightsville.

Nancy leaves behind her niece and two nephews, Debra J. Crumling, wife of Thomas Toborowski of Laurys Station, PA, Richard L. Crumling, Jr., husband of Kimberly of York, Eric (Min) D. Crumling, husband of Christina of York; three great nieces, Katelyn M. Moore of York, Kirsten M. Crumling of Phoenixville, Allison N. Crumling of York; three great nephews, Jacob C. Crumling, Maddox L. Crumling, Wesley M. Crumling all of York; one great great niece, Kendall Moore and two great great nephews, C.J. Moore, Lucas Moore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Richard L. Crumling, Sr.

Robert was a U.S. Army Veteran, tool and die maker, and skilled wood worker.

Robert P. Schmitt, 92, of Ironville, went home peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2022. Born in Camden, New Jersey, he was the son of the late John A. and Helen Wickenheiser Schmitt and husband of the late Mary Markley Schmitt, whom he was married for 61 years.

Robert graduated from Columbia High School, class of 1946, and received an Associate’s Degree from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. He proudly served in the United States Army. Robert was a tool and die maker at Alcoa and in 1991 retired from AMP/Tyco Corp in Mount Joy. In his retirement, he enjoyed working at Fox’s and Redner’s markets as a stocker and bagger, where he enjoyed greeting young children. He had a smile for everyone he met.  Robert was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society, where he was actively involved with BBQ, subs, and fastnacht sales. He was a skilled woodworker, known for his lathe and scroll work. He also enjoyed going deep sea fishing with family and friends.  He enjoyed working in his large garden and raising vegetables to share with others. He truly enjoyed being with family and friends.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Youtz, wife of Stephen, of Mountville; son, Robert P. Schmitt, Jr., husband of Deb, of Elizabethtown; 4 grandchildren: Robert, Gregory, Jennifer, and Justin; 3 great grandchildren; and sisters in law, Doris Schmitt and Nancy Schmitt. In addition to his parents and his wife, Robert was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph Schmitt and Albert Schmitt; and his grandson, Andrew Youtz.

A Memorial Mass for Robert will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 1, 2022, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, PA 17512.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Kids Express Preschool in Robert Schmitt’s name. James Louis “Jimbo” Norman, 30, of Wrightsville, passed away at home on March 24, 2022. Born in Langhorne, PA, he was the son of Louis J. Norman and Janet B. Keuper.

James grew up in Fairless Hills, PA; Derry, NH; Mount Joy, PA; and Landisville, PA. He was a 2010 graduate of Hempfield High School and of Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, where he studied Auto Mechanics and Welding. In 2016, James graduated from Thaddeus Stevens Institute of Technology in Lancaster. He worked as a welder at SWF Industrial Inc. of Wrightsville, and had previously worked for ITT Engineered Valves in Lancaster and TAIT Towers of Lititz. James enjoyed spending time with his friends, working on cars and playing hockey.

James is survived by his mother, Janet B. Keuper (Scott), of Landisville; his father, Louis J. Norman (Donna), of Mount Joy; his sisters, Erin M. Fike (Brian), of York, Ashley N. Norman, of Lancaster, and Kaitlin A. Norman, of Grantville; his nephews, Jaiden, Brooks, Graham; his niece, June; his dog, Zeppelin; and several uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A funeral service for James will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St., Columbia. Family and friends may view one hour prior to the service. Interment in Silver Spring Cemetery will follow the service. There will be a viewing on Monday, March 28, 2022 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Rev. Angela J. Misal, 66, of Columbia passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on March 23rd, 2022. She was born in Corning, NY to the late Norman and Nancy Baker and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Angela was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 1974 and attended Millersville University where she studied psychology. She loved the Lord and was ordained through Christian International, which began more than twenty-five years of service in the communities in and around Columbia. Angela was an avid musician specializing in vocal and piano while being a worship and youth leader. She adored her family and treasured spending time with them; especially her grandchildren.

Angela leaves behind her husband of almost forty-four years Gordon Misal of Columbia; her children, David, husband of Misty Misal of Spokane, WA, Carolyn Misal of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Nichole, Nathaniel, Maria, Jodee, Rebecca, Idubin, Dominic; one great grandchild, Riley; a sister, Diana, wife of John Elder of Bainbridge; a community of many friends.

Gerald was a life member of Baalis Sanford Lodge, Randolph Elks, and Randolph Amvets. Husband of the late Alice (Kilroy) (Sorrell) Rider, he was the father of Carl Rider, Lorene Venezia (Michael), Katherine Farrell, Richard Sorrell (and the late Melanie), Ramona Murray, David Sorrell, Phillip Sorrell, and the late Christopher Rider; grandfather and great grandfather of many; brother of Irene Bard, Linda Shaub and Carol Zook; and an uncle of many nieces and nephew.
