Michelle E."Chelley" Koser, 52, formerly of Columbia, passed away on November 30, 2018. She was the wife of John C. Koser. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Cletus B. Messer, Jr. and Joanne Furnari Messer, who survives.

Chelley was a food service worker, having been employed by Wendy's, Hershey Entertainment and St. Anne's which she truly loved. She enjoyed reading cookbooks, needlepoint and the company of her many cats.

In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by her siblings, Dale R. husband of Sandy Messer; Terri, wife of Randy Siegrist; Bernadette Newcomer, companion of Thomas; Hidi Wagner; Joseph Sequin, ten nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by her aunt and uncle.

Funeral services will be held at St. James Lutheran Church, 655 S. Tenth St., Columbia, PA 17512 on Monday, December, 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Mark S. Kopp, officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens. There will be no public viewing, however the family will receive family and friends at the church, one hour prior to the service. Please omit flowers. Retired Staff SGT United States Air Force

Service times: Private Interment, Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Retired Staff Sgt. Alvin C. Christian, 84, passed away on November 25, 2018 at the Lebanon V.A. Medical Center where he had been a patient for the past nine and a half years. Alvin was born in Yukon, WV, but at an early age moved to Tazewell, VA where he grew up.

In 1955 he joined the U.S.A.F. and served as an Air Traffic Controller. He served two tours of duty of which one was at Monkey Mountain, Vietnam, where his unit was hit and he was injured. He recuperated in Tokyo and returned to active duty. He was stationed in Thailand, Okinawa and Spain and twice in Germany. He competed in Judo for the U.S. Armed Forces throughout Europe and was a heavyweight champion for three straight years, 1963, 1964 and 1965. While in Germany, he learned to speak the language and was used as an interpreter at military meetings throughout Europe. He retired from the military in 1975.

Alvin was married for 40 years to Mary Wolpert Christian. They moved to Corvallis, OR in 1978 where he loved to hunt deer and elk, salmon fishing and deep-sea fishing. Al was a member of the Corvallis Lodge 1413, B.P.O.E. where he was past Exulted Ruler. He became interested in “rockhounding” while living in Oregon and had his own lapidary shop. He learned to wire wrap stones that he later polished, making them into jewelry. When his family moved back to Columbia in 1994, he sold his rocks and jewelry at Roots and Green Dragon Markets as well at craft shows throughout the Mid Atlantic states. The kid’s referred to him as the “Rockman.”

In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by his children: Joni, John, Pamela, Whitney and Kelly; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brothers: Verle, Walter, Orris, and Robert and sister, Patricia. He was preceded in death by a stillborn infant and siblings, William and Carol.

A private ceremony with Military Honors will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Richard R. Richards, 81, of Columbia, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018 at UMPC Pinnacle, Lancaster. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Ralph V. Richards, Sr. and Rose Wolfe Richards.

He graduated from Donegal High School in 1956 and was a U.S.A.F. veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged as a weapons mechanic assigned to the 354th Armament and Electronic Maintenance Squadron. He retired from the Sahd Metal Recycling Center, Columbia, where he was employed as a yard worker.

Rich was close to his poker friends, Mike, Marlin, Jim and Harry.

He is survived by his stepbrothers, Rodger, Timothy, and Thomas Richards; stepsisters, Rebecca Pieffer, Susie Richards. His stepmother, Elaine Hildebrand Richards; siblings, Ed, Bob, Ralph V. Sr. and Betty preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. 519 Walnut St. Columbia PA 17512 on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Mark S. Kopp officiating. Townsley, Sr. who preceded her in death in 2001. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Clyde M. and Laura Musselman Lefever.

Janet retired from AMP, Inc., Mount Joy and was a member of the Wrightsville Hope United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing Bingo at the "Hambones," trips to Hollywood Casino and bird watching.

She is survived by her two daughters, Linda, wife of Thomas Fetter, Tammy, wife of Edward Dickel; grandchildren, Avalon, Sarah, Erik; five stepchildren and a sister, Shirley Bayman.

A celebration of Janet's life will be held at the Wrightsville Hope U.M. Lou Lou

Mary Lou Sipe, 79, of Lancaster passed away on November 17th, 2018. She was born in Columbia to the late William H. and Esther Schmook Brommer and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mary Lou was a 1957 graduate of Columbia High School and retired as the supervisor at Jay’s Nest at Elizabethtown College in 2001 after 16 years of service. She enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City, MD since the 1970s, playing bingo, visiting the casino, and shopping. Mary Lou, was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister who adored her family.

Lou Lou, as she was affectionately known, was always smiling. She was always willing the help others. She loved to meet new friends, give and receive hugs, and share treats with others, and give small gifts, especially angels. She also loved to travel to see new places and visit family and friends.

She made many friends in Columbia and Wrightsville where she lived nearly all her life. In Wrightsville, she was elected Judge of Elections and worked the polls for years. She was a volunteer for number of organizations including Columbia Meals on Wheels. During her later years, she resided in Trinity House for about 6.5 years until 2016, after selling her home of about 50 years in Wrightsville. While at Trinity House, she enjoyed welcoming many new residents of the building, brightening the building with her cheerful decorations during various holidays, and going to breakfast almost daily at her favorite nearby restaurant, Hinkle’s Restaurant.

During her 16 years working at Elizabethtown College, she loved working with and serving the students. She stayed in touch with students even after graduation and attended some of their weddings.

Mary Lou leaves behind her sons, Jim, husband of Karen Sipe of Lancaster, John Sipe, fiancé of Missy Chronister of York; four grandchildren, Abby, Andy, Anthony, Ally and mother Leah Sipe; great grandchild, Dakota; her siblings: William H. Brommer, Jr., husband of Madeline Brommer; Joanne Stotz, wife of the late Harold Stotz; Linda Cramer, wife of the late Martin Cramer; Jack Brommer, husband of Rosie Brommer; numerous nieces and nephews who knew her as Aunt Lou.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin E. Sipe in 1977; four siblings, Esther Gochenaur, Margaret Ulmer, Janet Bowles, and Wilma Kuhn.

Services for Mary Lou will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1st, 2018 at the Clyde W. Kraft funeral Home, 519 Walnut St., Columbia, Pa 17512. Red Rose Award for Volunteerism.

Edward R. Eshleman, 90, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 12, 2018 at the Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Alice Martin Eshleman who preceded him in death in 2010. Born and raised in Washington Boro, he was the son of the late Earl and Alice Neff Eshleman.

Ed retired from the former Bear Creek Construction Company, where he was employed as superintendent of road and bridge construction. He was a lifetime member of the Washington Boro Church of God where he served for many years on the church council and taught teen boys Sunday School. He was recognized by the Lancaster Newspapers, receiving the Red Rose Award for his volunteerism in helping to restore the Washington Boro Heritage Center Building, the Washington Boro Fire Company and the Church of God Parsonage.

Always generous with his time, Ed enjoyed helping others, welcoming people at St. John's Herr Estates, often baking pies for them, in addition to helping with projects. His greatest joy was his family, especially visits with his great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for having a generous heart and giving spirit.

Ed is survived by his four daughters, Donna, wife of James Bailey; Susan, wife of Jack Miller; Sheila Mann; Rita, wife of Lynn Hollinger; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and brother, James Eshleman. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Earl.

A memorial service will be held from the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Regitz, officiating. He retired in 2014 after more then 30 years of service from the Armstrong Ceiling Plant, Marietta. Well known in Marietta civic circles, Bill was active in the Marietta Fire Police and for many years served as the borough dog catcher.

In addition to his wife, surviving are his daughters, Melissa, wife of John Auten; Shelby, wife of Todd Sweigart; Nicole, wife of Tom King; two grandchildren, Dayna, wife of Cory Mays, Joshua Haubert; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Caydence, Emily; brother, Barry Dolby; sister, Mary Nein.

James was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 2006 and graduated from Lancaster County Career & Technology Center where he studied auto mechanics. He worked for almost ten years at St. Anne’s Retirement Community and for the last four years he worked at the former Colonial Metals. James enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and being outdoors, but he absolutely loved being with his family and friends.

James leaves behind his son, Blade Smith of Marietta; his parents, Carl, Jr. husband of Debrah Smith of Columbia; his sister, Mandy Smith, companion of Michael Girdley of Marietta; his grandparents, James and Julie Zink of Columbia; several aunt’s, uncles, cousins, and friends. Merrill J. Hess, 77 of 304 Kilgannon Lane, Lancaster, PA died on Sunday, November 11, 2018 surrounded by his family at home.He was the husband of Teresa M. Williams Hess.They would have celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary on November 24th.

Born in Magnolia, NJ he was the son of the late John E. and Helen M. Shimko Hess. Merrill retired as a foreman from Nolt & Nolt, Inc. He was a member of the Faith Outreach Center Assembly of God Church in Mt. Joy. Merrill played baseball in high school and was scouted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was an avid sports fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. He also loved horse racing. Merrill was a man who spoke his mind and had a strong constitution for life. He loved to sing and loved listening to Gospel Music. He proudly served his country as a SPC. 4 U.S. Army and served in Korea and Alaska.

Surviving besides his wife is a son: Merrill J. Hess, Jr. (Joey) husband of Darryl Coble of Lancaster, PA, 3 daughters: Tammy wife of Shamar Anderson of Columbia, PA, Sara wife of Glenn Greenawalt of Lancaster, PA, and Julie wife of Kenneth Horn of Middletown, CT. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren: Desiree Poole, Samia Anderson, Paige Greenawalt, Mitchell Greenawalt, Colin Horn and Devin Horn, 2 sisters: Vivian wife of Sterling Noecher of Bernville, PA and Joyce wife of Forrest Weitzel of Mohnton, PA. He was predeceased by twin grandchildren: Avery Patricia and Declan Joseph Horn and 3 brothers: William, Bruce and John Hess.

John Charles Rutter, Jr., 73, of Marietta, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Margaret E. (Rapp) Rutter whom passed away in 2008. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late John C., Sr. and Lulu (Seyler) Rutter.

John retired from Amtrak where he was an electrician. He proudly served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam. John volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 35 and was a train enthusiast. He was an avid bowler and bridge player who loved the outdoors and hunting. John was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia.

John leaves behind his sons, John C. Rutter, III. companion of Viki Malone, Marietta and James Rutter, Columbia; his siblings: Delores Eck, Patricia Sperows, Robert Rutter and Thomas Rutter; his grandchildren: Emily, Matthew, Jamison, Hope and Darius and several nieces and nephews and a large extended family.

Donald R. Pickle, Sr., of Columbia went to be with the Lord on November 5th, 2018. He was raised in Marietta to the late Roy and Margaret Campbell Pickle. Donald was a graduate of the former Marietta High School with the Class of 1950 and proudly served in the United States Navy in Korea aboard the U.S.S. Stockham DD683. Following his service, he owned Pickle’s Barber Shop in Marietta for thirty years and then started his own hauling business. Donald loved to hunt and fish and even taught his grandchildren how. He was an accomplished artist, musician, and gardener who was proud of his talents. Donald was a member of the N.R.A., American Legion Post 466, and the V.F.W. Post 2435. He will be remembered for his generosity to others and for the love of his family.

Donald adored and was dedicated to his wife for sixty seven years, Jacqueline Helwig Pickle of Columbia. He also leaves behind his children, Donald, Jr., husband of Amy Pickle of Marietta, Jon, husband of Patricia Pickle of Conestoga, Susan, wife of Paul Enrico of Hellam, Julieann, wife of Patrick Davis, Sr. of Mount Joy; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; his sister, Suzanne, wife of Steven Doles of Seal Beach, CA.

Vincent E. "Butch" Holland, 79, a lifelong Columbia resident, flew to his Savior on November 3, 2018, at Moravian Manor of Lititz. Born to the late Charles and Eleanora McComsey Holland, he was the husband of Mary Lou Price Holland. They were married for 56 years.

Butch retired from the former ITT Grinnell Corporation, Columbia and Penncast Corporation, Marietta. He was an active member of the Grace E.C. Church, Columbia; the former Salem Boat Club, and was an avid Susquehanna Riverman. He enjoyed fishing and hunting throughout his life. Butch's interest in the Susquehanna was displayed in his construction of models of the bridges that spanned the river. He would share his knowledge with senior citizen groups after retiring. He will be remembered by his family as a loving and kind hearted pappy.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Pamela, wife of James Humbert; Denise, wife of Wayne Miller, Jr.; Kathleen, wife of Gregory Breach, Sr.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a sister, Patricia Wagner.

Dewey E. Fritz, 81, a lifelong resident of Columbia, passed peacefully on October 31, 2018 at home. Born to the late Dewey S. Fritz and Florence Hood Garner, he was the husband of JoAnn Farley Fritz. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May.

A Columbia High School graduate, Class of 1956, he retired in 1996 after 27 years of service from Armstrong World Industries, Marietta Ceiling Plant where he was employed as a supervisor. He was later employed by the Safe Harbor Dam as a security guard. A job he truly enjoyed. He was a member of the L.O.O.M #307, Columbia Fish and Game and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. He will be remembered by his family as a jokester and will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Kim Rentschler; Brian, husband of Deborah Ward; Wendy Neff; Kathleen White; Scott, husband of Denine Ward; Jeffrey Fritz; Beth, wife of Jack Siegrist; Eric Fritz; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Jack Fritz as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Harold, Richard, Vincent, Oliver, Blanche Resh, and Florence Garner.

A funeral service will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Mark S. Kopp, officiating. Family and friends may view at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Kindly omit flowers. June Kathryn Divet, 88, of Landisville passed away on November 2nd, 2018. She was born in Columbia to the late Nathaniel E. and Kathryn Billet Snyder and was a lifelong resident of this area. June graduated from the former Maytown High School with the Class of 1948. She enjoyed doing word searches and journaling, as well as gardening and was an avid hiker into her early eighties. June was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister who adored her family.

June leaves behind her children, Gayla, wife of Jack Reeder of Tipp City, OH, Darla, wife of Bob Klinger of Landisville, Karen Divet of Landisville; three siblings, her twin brother Gene “Bud”, husband of Arlene Snyder of Columbia, Ruth Cope of Bethel, PA, Lois, wife of Ken Newcomer of Millersville; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; her loving “grand dog” Ellie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, L. Ronald Divet in 1988; her son, Dwain Divet in 2018; a sister, Lyle Siegrist; two brothers-in-law, Tom Cope and Ben Siegrist.

Services for June will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9th, 2018 at Kinderhook Evangelical Congregational Church, 562 Kinderhook Rd., Columbia, Pennsylvania 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Silver Spring Cemetery. Ruth Smith Albright, 90, of Lancaster passed away peacefully on October 31st, 2018. She was born in Marietta to the late Elvin R. and Esther Straub Smith and was a lifelong resident of this area. Ruth was a selfless homemaker who sacrificed for helping others and supporting her home. She enjoyed listening to music that included singing and piano playing. Ruth loved reading the Bible and grew up a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marietta. Most recently she attended Ironville United Methodist Church.

Ruth leaves behind her children, Greg, husband of Sharon Albright of Lancaster, Patty, wife of the late Michael Peters of Marietta; a niece, Trudy Shirk of Elizabethtown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty three years, Richard C. Albright in 2006 and her brother Edward Smith.

Services for Ruth will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 6th, 2018 at Ironville United Methodist Church, 4020 Holly Dr, Columbia, PA 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. She will be laid to rest by her late husband in a private burial. Milton C. "Whitey" Scott, 84, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at the Lancaster General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, after a long hard battle with many medical issues. He was the beloved husband of Muriel Myers Scott with whom he was married 66 years. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Milton L. Scott and Margaret Sumpman.

A Columbia High School graduate, Class of 1952, Whitey retired after 33 years of service from the former ITT Grinnell Corporation where he worked as a machine operator and core maker. He later worked in road maintenance for PennDot, retiring in 2003.

Whitey was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan, enjoyed hunting and in his earlier years enjoyed spending time along the river at the family cottage. and was a fixture around town jogging. In addition, he was a life member of the B.P.O.E #1074 and a life member of the Foresters of America, Susquehanna Court 235.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Milton P. husband of Kathy Scott and a grandson, Milton D. Scott.

Shirley A. Roeser, 81, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at home. She was the wife of Thomas E. Roeser to whom she was married 40 years. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Abraham J., Sr. and Geraldine Blumenshine Bachman.

Before her retirement, Shirley owned and operated the Shirley Campbell Unisex Salon and Spa, the former Springhouse Tavern and the Cheers Emporium and Drinking Parlor. She enjoyed traveling, fishing and loved her Sunday family cookouts along the river.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her daughters, Bonnie Jean Campbell; Melinda Lou Campbell wife of Stephen Shapee; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean wife of Theodore Shellenberger, Grace wife of Joseph Althoff and Mary Lou Geltz. She was preceded in death by her son, James Campbell, Jr., great-grandson, Kyrie Campbell and brother, Abraham J. Bachman, Jr.

A funeral service will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. David Powers officiating. Retired Elementary School Teacher

Lois I. Barninger passed away peacefully on October 24th, 2018. She was born in Pottstown to the late David M. and Marion Echoff Miller. Lois was a graduate of McCaskey High School with the Class of 1950 and then attended Millersville State Teachers College, graduating in 1954. She was an elementary school teacher and taught in Lancaster City Schools and then 3rd grade at Park Elementary in Columbia eventually retiring in 1992. Lois was a lifetime member of N.E.D. and P.S.E.A. and was a volunteer with Lancaster Public School District and St. Anne’s Retirement Community. She was lifelong member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Lancaster and active in United Methodist Women where she held both district and conference positions. Lois was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who adored her family.

Lois leaves behind her children, William, husband of Kathy Dunlap of Virginia Beach, VA, Scott Barninger of Pocamoke, MD, Robert, husband of Donna Barninger of Norristown, PA, Sandy, wife of Brad Nonnenmocher of Mount Joy, PA; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Barninger in 1989; her daughter, Beatrice Ellis; two brothers, D. Murdock Miller and Ronald E. Miller.

Services for Lois will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 27th, 2018 in the Chapel at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia, PA 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens.
