Shane A. Bechtold, Sr., 60, passed away at his West Hempfield Township home on Monday, December 25, 2023 unexpectedly of natural causes. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Harry P. Sr. and Dorothy Nein Bechtold.

Shane was employed for many years at his father's business, Colebrook Supply. He also did lawn care work and was previously employed by the former Lancaster Press. An avid outdoorsman he enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and rooting for the Chicago Bears.

He is survived by his children, Shane A. Bechtold, Jr. (Jessica); Brianne Bechtold; Marissa Scholl (Adam); grandkids, Julia, Kole, Taylor, Hayes; brothers, Greg Bechtold (Penny); Harry P. Bechtold, Jr. (Carol); sisters, Kimberly Britcher (Ken) and Ronet Buzzendore (Mark). His brother Jeffrey Bechtold preceded him in death.

Priscilla Jane “PJ” Bragg Glick, 90, has been reunited with her daughter, Sarah Jane Murry and her adoring husband, David Elam Glick.  She was the daughter of the late Reverend Otis Glenn Bragg and Priscilla Jane Poling Bragg.

PJ was a gifted seamstress and an amazing crafter who could turn anything into something whimsical and fun.  She would often sing loud enough while gardening that the neighbors could hear.  PJ truly had a green thumb; she could bring any plant back from the brink of death.  Her home was a time capsule of vintage items she collected and continued to procure through auctions in her later years. 

She lived and loved life to the fullest.

Besides her parents, husband and daughter; she was preceded in death by her six brothers and two sisters.  PJ is survived by her son, Bobby Murry and his wife Midge; her daughter, Glenda (Murry) Perry; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren.

A private internment will be held at the Longenecker Reformed Mennonite Cemetery.

Raymond Clifford Wallace, Jr., 98, passed away peacefully at home on Christmas Day, December 25, 2023. Ray was a decorated veteran who severed in WWII with the 507th PIR of the 82nd Airborne Division. He participated in the D-Day Evasion June 6, 1944 and later was captured becoming a POW until March 1945.

Ray was born January 22, 1925 in Lyleville, Pennsylvania to his parents, Raymond and Geraldine Wallace. He married his wife and mother of his 13 children, Hannah Lucille Wagner, May 1949. They were married for nearly 70 years until Hannah passed December 21, 2018. They resided in the town of Windburn before moving to Columbia in 1971.

Ray retired from Armstrong World Industries in 1993 at age 68, though continued to work until 93 years of age as a security guard.

When he wasn't working, he enjoyed gardening and cracking jokes. In the past 6 years he has made several trips abroad to participate in D-Day Ceremonies in France, Netherlands, and Belgium as well as Pearl Harbor. It is safe to say he has friends from all over the world and is known for his signature thumbs up.

Ray was a lifetime member of the Beers VFW Post 7043 in Coalport. He participated in many parades over the years, including being the Grand Marshall. He is a life member of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter 82nd Airborne Association and was a member of the Paul Revere Leber Post #372, American Legion, Columbia.

He and his son, Roger Wallace was recently invited to the 26th Annual Conference and American Valor Program in Washington, D.C., but his health had started taking a turn and he could not make the trip.

Surviving are the following children: Linda wife of Dwight Eck, Columbia; Diane wife of Jacob Kline, Jr., Marietta; Betsy wife of Dennis Brock, Columbia; Boyd Wallace, Elizabethtown; Raymond Wallace III., Columbia; James Wallace, Columbia; Kevin husband of Robin Wallace, Manheim; Beverly wife of Paul Sholl, Columbia; Lisa Taylor, Dumfries, VA; Roger Wallace, Columbia; Drew Wallace, Raystown; Brett Wallace, Columbia; his sister, Shirley Palosky, Irwin, PA; and brother, Charles Wallace, Lyleville, PA; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Victoria Roob and grandchildren: Danielle Eck, Vincent Salvatore and Eric Wallace and sister, Eileen Green.

Rita J. Keys Horn, 95, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. She was the wife of the late Richard "Dick" Horn with whom she celebrated 75 years of marriage on May 10th, 2022. A lifelong Columbia resident, she was the daughter of the late Thomas L. and Bertha L. Staab Keys.

Rita graduated from the former St. Peter's Catholic School and was Salutatorian of her graduating class at the former St. Joseph's Academy, both of Columbia. She was employed at the former Marietta Depot, Hinkle's Pharmacy and ultimately worked at the former Columbia News when she left the workforce to be at home with her children. She returned to work once they were grown and retired from the dental office of Dr. William Korman and Dr. Richard J. Wroblewski in 1990.

A parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and was a past President of the Holy Trinity Mother's Club. She was also a member of the AARP and the Auxiliary of St. Anne's Retirement Community.

Preceded in death by her husband Dick, Rita is survived by their children, Christine H. wife of Donald L. Sylvester; Joanne H. wife of John "Bot" Roda; David R. husband of Cherie (Hart) Horn; Barbara L. wife of Kyle DiBrito; grandchildren, Katharine L. Roda, Zachary B. Roda and partner Veronica Jancuk, Sandy (DiBrito) wife of Bryan Delahunty, Marcus DiBrito and wife Michelle; and great grandson, Luka Delahunty. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Pauline Waller, Leona "Pat" Yeager and Marie Bartch.

Harold E. Shellenberger, 88, formerly of Columbia and Marietta, passed away on Friday, December, 29, 2023. He was the husband of the late Lois Carman Shellenberger who preceded him in death in 2011. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Theodore S. Sr. and Josephine Reickard Shellenberger.

Harold retired in 1999 after 29 years of service from the Armstrong Ceiling Plant, Marietta. He was a member of the Marietta Boat Club. He enjoyed trips to the beach, observing the local wildlife, and being outdoors as a hunter and fisherman. He loved the companionship of dogs and could often be found giving treats to them under the table.

He is survived by his son, Scott W. husband of the late Pamela Shellenberger; grandchildren, Andrew W. husband of Kim B. Shellenberger, Leah E. Shellenberger, Hayley wife of Ade Adeyemo, and sister Carol Frey. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Philip Shellenberger and brothers Gary W. and Theodore S. Shellenberger, Jr.

Harold's memorial service will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Monday, January 8, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Mark S. Kopp, officiating. Charles J. "Big Charlie" McCarthy, Sr., 73 of Wrightsville, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023. He was the husband of Jeanne Hammer McCarthy with whom he was married 50 years. Born in York, he was the son of the late Robert and Jacqueline Silar McCarthy.

A graduate of Eastern High School, Class of 1968, Charlie retired in 2018 after 41 years of service from ITT Grinnell Corp. where he was employed as a millwright. He was a member of the Wrightsville Fire Co. and the former Vigilant and Shawnee Fire Departments in Columbia. He enjoyed family camping trips to Cowan's Gap State Park, Jeep trucks and the companionship of his canine family.

In addition to his wife are his sons, Charles J., Jr. husband of Connie McCarthy; Dale R. McCarthy; Douglas A. husband of Cindy McCarthy; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and his sister, Lillian wife of Jerry Heupel. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jackie L. Hake and nephews Jerry, Jr. and Robbie Heupel.

Harriet Elizabeth Lauver, 82, of Marietta passed away on December 24, 2023. She was born in Columbia to the late Earl and Mabel Stoutzenberger and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Harriet attended Columbia High School and worked for many years with various shoe manufacturing and garment factories. Most recently she was a machine operator with Howmet. Hariett enjoyed playing bingo at the Columbia Fire Hall (hambones) and was also a member of the Marietta American Legion Post 466. Christmas time was her favorite time of year to decorate and watch her family open gifts. Hariett loved her family and treasured spending time with them, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Harriet leaves behind her children, Brian, husband of Michelle Stoutzenberger of Red Lion, Robin, wife of Corey Zohner of Hamburg, Miles Lauver, III of Marietta; seven grandchildren, Sara, Brian II., Adam, Nichole, Troy, Jr., Justin, and Megan; seven great grandchildren, Kilalah, Mugen, Layla, Ayden, Adam, Jr., Barret, and Ellie; two siblings, Patricia Witmer and William Stoutzenberger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Miles Lauver, Jr. in 2020 and seven siblings, Earl, Betty Lou, Robert, Kenneth, Richard, Romaine, Thomas.

Lee Irvin Noffz, 76, of Columbia passed away on December 22, 2023. He was born in Columbia to the late Carl and Sarah Noffz.

Lee was a graduate of Hempfield High School with the Class of 1965 and proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1966 – 1973. Following his service, he worked as an electrical engineer with the former Bowen McLaughlin York, now United Defense and General Dynamics before his retirement. During his career he graduated from Penn State University with a degree in electrical Engineering. Lee was an avid Penn State fan especially Nittany Lions football. WE ARE! He also enjoyed hunting and visiting his family’s cabin in Clearfield County. Lee loved reading and movies. He was known to attend the theater weekly. Lee was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who adored his family and treasured spending time with them.

Lee leaves behind his wife of fifty-six years Carol Noffz of Columbia; two children, Chris Noffz of Mountville, companion of Holly and Lori, wife of Darren Husted of Landisville; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Noffz of Lancaster, Megan and Brandon Husted of Landisville; Brother-in-law, Bobby, husband of Karen Rummel of Lititz; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jay Noffz.

Kenneth R. Moore, Sr., 81 of Washington Boro passed away on December 19, 2023. He was born in Columbia to the late John and Helen Moore and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Ken attended Penn Manor High School and proudly served in the National Guard. He worked for over forty years with the Burnham Corporation as a sheet metal mechanic before his retirement. Ken was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. Ken was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother who adored his family, especially his grandkids.

Ken leaves behind his wife of over fifty-seven years Betty Moore of Washington Boro; his son, Ken Jr., husband of Peggy Moore of Columbia; three grandchildren, Ashley, wife of Brandon Stricker of Marietta, Zac, husband of Ashley Horst of York, Ally Horst of Naples, FL; four great grandchildren, Brantly, Blake, Gavin, and Cora; two sisters, Edith Tangert of Wrightsville, Helen, wife of Kim Veno of Sanbornville, NH. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers.

As a devoted wife, mother, grandma, and great-grandma she poured boundless love and wisdom into the lives of her family & others. Her gentle guidance and constant support formed the foundation upon which countless memories were built.

Lucy’s spirit of resilience was unmatched; she embraced life with an unyielding determination to find joy in every circumstance. Her unwavering optimism inspired others to see the beauty in even the simplest moments.

Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched with her selfless love and constant positivity. Mary Lucia Stephens will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Robert A. Kling, 75 of York, formerly of Columbia passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023. Born in York, he was the son of the late Charles S. Sr. and Catherin Smith Kling.

A graduate of Eastern High School, he was employed at Burnham Corp., Lancaster. For many years, Bob coached little league baseball for the Columbia Boys Athletic Association. An avid outdoorsman and fisherman, he was a member of the Yorkanna Game and Gunning Club. In addition, he was an ardent fan of the Phillies and Eagles.

He will be missed by his daughter, Wendy L. Shoster; four grandchildren, Benjamin Nutter (Tovah), Richie Eppley (Emily), Kara Eiceman (Joshua), Kalli Shoster (Scott Aschenbrenner); great grandchildren, Ava, Max, Mya and Kynsey; siblings, Trina Kling and Charles S. Kling, Jr. He was preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Michael Kling.

James “Jim” Robert Haug, 72, of Columbia passed away, surrounded by his family on December 10, 2023. He was born in Columbia to the late Carl and Anna Haug and was a lifelong resident of Columbia.

Jim was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 1969 and proudly served in the United States Navy. Following his service, he worked as a letter carrier with the Columbia Post Office until his retirement. He then worked for a number of years with the Lancaster Newspaper. Jim was a member of Columbia VFW Post #2435 and also a faithful member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and visiting his cabin in Potter County. Jim also was an avid photographer and founded the Facebook group “What's Happening in Columbia, Pa. and Surrounding Area”. He was well known for his photos of the Veterans Memorial Bridge as well as many photos of Columbia landmarks. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle who adored his family and treasured spending time with them.

Jim leaves behind his wife of fifty-one years Paula Haug of Columbia; four daughters, Patty Haug of Columbia, Jenny, wife of Jim Jones of Columbia, Jessy Haug, fiancée of Ryan Einzig of Elizabethtown, Pammy Haug of Columbia; eleven grandchildren, Tonya, Hunter, Ava, Cash, Gregory, Jerrika, Jaydin, Damen, Veronica, Azzy, and Gabby; five great grandchildren, Evelyn, Emma, Alexandra, Addilyn, and Ayden; seven sisters, Carla Lindenberger, Judy Clark, Donna Haug, Cathy Berdiner, Sue Wieler, Sharon Herr, and Jody Croft; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Bill was a graduate of McCaskey High School with the Class of 1967. He was an avid Cleveland Browns football fan and also enjoyed hiking and baseball. Bill was a member of Post 34 Sons of the American Legion. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who adored his family.

Bill leaves behind his wife of 33 years Lisa Rosenberger; two children, Erik and Aimee Rosenberger; a sister, Beverly Foltz all of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In honor of Bill’s wishes there will be no formal services and any future services will be announced by his family. Paul C. Schlotthauer, 64 of Columbia passed away peacefully at his home on December 3, 2023. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Chester and Renata Bigler Schlotthauer.

A Hempfield High School graduate Class of 1978 he was employed in retail slates at the former C.A. Herr Hardware Store, Columbia, Lowes and most recently Sahd Metal Recycling Center, Columbia. He enjoyed collecting vintage electric generators and electric gadgetry.

Paul is survived by his brother Alan C. Schlotthauer; two nephews Matthew husband of Amanda Schlotthauer; Joseph husband of Carin Schlotthauer; two great-nieces and three great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Earl C. Schlotthauer.

Kenneth L. Sheckard, 80, of Columbia, went HOME to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 17, 2023 at Lancaster General Hospital.  He was the husband of Carole Clark Sheckard to whom he was married for 52 years.  Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Wilmer and Mary Carson Sheckard.

Ken proudly served his country in the United States Army. He graduated from Columbia High School with the Class of 1961.  He retired as a payroll supervisor for Anvil International.  Ken was very active in sports and coached baseball for many years.  He served on the Board of Lancaster Midget Baseball League where he was former President and Vice President.  Also, Ken attended Manor Church, Lancaster.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Seth husband of Elizabeth Sheckard, twins, Ann Sheckard and Mark husband of Nicole Sheckard; grandchildren, Derek Sheckard and his fiancé Alicia Waltemyer, Andrew and Erin Sheckard; great grandchildren, Raelynn and Brynlee Sheckard and a sister, Sandra Hilt.

Funeral services will be held for Ken on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 2:00 pm from Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, PA with Rev. Dan Sigman and Seth Sheckard, officiating. A viewing will be held at the church from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm.  Interment will follow at Silver Spring Cemetery with military honors presented by Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard.

David Leon Heffner, 68, of Wrightsville passed away on November 13, 2023. He was born in York to Betty and the late Alvin (Jack) Heffner.

Dave was a graduate of Red Lion High School with the Class of 1972. In his younger years he was a hunter and fisherman who loved visiting the mountains. He was also active in Boy Scouts with Troop 42. Dave worked for many years with Harley Davidson until his eventual retirement. He and his wife enjoyed spending time with their son, Nate, by attending “steamups”, which were meetups to ride and operate miniature steam engines. Dave and Nate also enjoyed helping each other with various projects in their workshop. After Dave became ill, he loved sitting on his back deck on a sunny day with the company of family and friends.

Dave leaves behind his wife of forty-one years Sherryl Heffner of Wrightsville; his son, Nate Heffner of Wrightsville; his mother, Betty Heffner of Brogue; two siblings, Scott, husband of Jeanne Heffner of Brogue, Lori, wife of Kent Heffner of Brogue; a sister-in-law, Pat Heffner of York; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother Steven Heffner.

Sherry Shank, 59, of Columbia passed away on October 30, 2023. She was born in Columbia to the late Harold and Lorrene Mauss and was a lifelong resident of this area. Sherry attended Donegal High School and worked most recently Birmingham Woodwork. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who adored her family and treasured spending time with them. Sherry was known to help anyone in need.

She enjoyed watching her Green Bay Packers.

Sherry leaves behind her husband of thirty-three years Jeffrey Shank, Sr. of Columbia; three children, Christine shank, companion of Justin Blasick, Jeffrey, Jr., companion of Amanda Hamilton, Vincent, husband of Mahalia Mauss all of Columbia; nine grandchildren; brothers, Harold, Barry and Vince; sister, Donna; niece and nephew, Tiffany and Anthony; sisters-in-law, Tina McGurk and Sandra Currier; and brother-in-law, Tony Shank.

Patrick M. Donan, age 59, of Columbia passed away peacefully on Monday, November 6th 2023 at the Hospice and Community Care Center in Mt. Joy. Born in Lancaster, PA on April 18th, 1964 he was the son of the late Thomas and Barbara (Aston) Donan.

Patrick was a 1982 graduate of Columbia High School. He continued his education at Millersville University graduating in 1985 and received his law degree from Temple Law School in 1988. He went on to have a successful 35-year career as a Workman’s Compensation attorney and partner in the Philadelphia area at Steiner, Segel, Muller and Donan. Patrick was a member of the American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association and Philadelphia Bar Association.

In June of 2023, he was awarded the prestigious Martha Hampton award by his peers in the Philadelphia Workman’s Compensation section for his compassion and dedication to his clients, professionalism, scholarship, and goodwill with his peers.

Patrick was a faithful and longtime member of the Columbia Church of God. He was a man of great faith, values and generosity. Outside of work he enjoyed spending time and visiting with his family, relatives and friends, going for walks and to the beach, vacationing on his annual road trip in December, and gathering people together for lively board games on the weekends. He will be remembered as a loving, caring, and compassionate person and a friend and mentor to many.

Patrick is survived by his sister Mary Donan (Columbia, PA), niece Kelly (Drew) Rochotte, (Ohio) nephew Donald (Kara) Thompson (Ohio), sister-in law Debra Donan, nephews Thomas Donan, Garry (Cynthia) Donan, and niece Katie (Denny) Halso (all of NC). In addition, he is survived by 8 grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Terry (Donald) Thompson and his brother Thomas Donan.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lancaster General Hospital, Hospice and Community Care Center, and his medical team at PennMed in Philadelphia for their care and support.

A memorial service for Patrick will be held Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 510 Walnut Street, Columbia, PA with Rev. Fred Thomas, officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9:00 a.m. -11 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Bethel Cemetery.

Rose Marie Spiese, age 87, expired on September 7, 2023 at the Lancaster Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster, PA

where she was a resident.  She was born on November 29, 1935, the tenth of 13 children born to Albert L. Spiese, Jr. and Hilda Ember Spiese of Columbia, PA.  She is survived by one brother, Richard D. Spiese of Sheffield, CA, and one sister, Geraldine E. Spiese of Telford, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Rose was a 1953 graduate of Columbia High School.  She earned a BA degree in education from Millersville State College and a Master’s degree from Temple University.  She taught in Lancaster City Schools for many years until her retirement, following which she continued as a substitute teacher.  Her students found her to be faithful, kind, caring, generous, trustworthy, and fun-loving.    She leaves behind a legacy of many students whose stories demonstrate these characteristics.  She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed mystery novels.  She thoroughly enjoyed assisting with theatrical productions at McCaskey High School whether dealing with tickets, helping with costuming, painting sets, and helping the actors in learning their lines.  All of these things after a full day of teaching.

A memorial service for Rose will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. 519 Walnut Street, Columbia PA, on November 29, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.  Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment in Silver Spring Cemetery. Robert M. McClung, 79, of Columbia went to be with his Lord and Savior at 3:00 a.m. with the time change on November 5, 2023. He was born in Newark, OH to the late Emory and Alma McClung.

Robert was a graduate of McCaskey High School and proudly served in United States Navy from 1963 -1967 aboard the U.S.S. Pine Island. During the Vietnam War he was exposed to Agent Orange. Following his service, Robert worked with the former Bolova Tech until his eventual retirement. For three years he was part time maintenance with St. Anne’s Retirement Community.

He was a loving family man who adored his grandchildren and treasured spending time with them. Robert was a faithful member of Hope Born in Christ Church.

Robert leaves behind his wife of almost twelve years Bonnie McClung of Columbia; three daughters, Michele, wife of Alex Medina of York, Alysia Dickens of Columbia, Krystal, wife of Mark Lane of York; three grandchildren, Kaliope, Benjamin, and Nevan; one great granddaughter, ZelleMae; two siblings, Bud, husband of Bonnie Mason of Mingo Junction, OH, Donna, wife of Richard Wade of Ivanhoe, NC; sister-in-law, Shirley McClung of Lancaster; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Carol McClung; his son, Nathan McClung; three siblings, Bill McClung, Doris Gasbarro, and Betty Shannon.
